TPMS ?

I'm getting new tires. Discount tire is telling me they have to charge $30 per wheel to rebuild the TPM.

Is this BS.

I think that you can reset it to adjust for your new tires. Check your Owners Manual.

 

Also telling us what year and model your truck is will help a lot.

 

They want to take them off the wheel and replace seals/gaskets. If your stems aren't leaking now, I'd say leave them alone. What year is your truck (or how old are your wheels)? If they're five years old or less, I wouldn't even think about replacing gaskets yet.

 

Did you mean $3? Cause $30 per tire is shear rape. Some shops now include it for "free" with the mounting fees. Around here Tires Plus is one such shop. They charge $14 to mount/balance a tire. The TPMS kit is included.

I was charged 3/tire. To my understanding, they have to remove the valves and loosen the tpms while mounting the tire otherwise there is a risk of breaking the sensor. That is how they explained it to me, either I was told the truth or fed a bunch of BS, I spent the money

 

its a 2009 taco trd off road ....45k miles....just getting new shoes....

He said $30 per tire...which I thought was bs...

 

30 per tire is a RIP! I just called my discount, its free with any new tires you buy. Otherwise 3$ per tire.

 

They charged me when I switched wheels which makes sense but changing tires it just doesn't seem necessary.

 

OP, either the salesman is confused, saying it wrong, or you're understanding him wrong. I don't know which of the three it is, but someone is confused because Discount charges $7.50 each TPMS rebuild kit, for a TOTAL of $30. This is standard across the board with Discount, so somewhere it's being interpreted incorrectly.

Also, it's not a requirement to have them rebuilt, but is recommended.

 

I just had new tires put on at Discount tire.. I dont see a charge on my bill..I have the same truck as you.

 

Goodyear replaced mine and never said a word about it and i have not had an issue.

 

Thanks for the info, I did call them back and he again said 30 per....so yeah BS.....I think he is just trying to make back having to price match online tires.

FYI new tires are BFG all terr..KO....275/70/16
Online has them on sale for 189....just an FYI.....no affiliated....Discount matched the price, but im think he is just trying to make back the diff. I called another Discount, they said the other store is confused. No need to replace TPM unless seal is leaking and yes $7.50 to replace per tire.

Just did tires at Discount and refused the rebuild kits. Told them that they're fine now and if they leak afterward that it would be their fault and that they would have to make it right. No kits, no charge, no leaks. Stick to your guns and don't pay for that BS.

 

Yeah good luck with that, after you refused the service during the tire replacement process that commonly results in TPMS leaks. Rebuilding TPMS sensors when replacing tires is recommended for a reason.

Having said that, when I put on my last set of tires I chose not to rebuild my sensors either, but I also would not expect anyone else to take the blame for any subsequent leaks that were the result of my choosing not to follow this recommendation. If you paid to have them rebuilt and then they leaked, that would be a different story.

 

That is exactly why they replace the seals. If you refused to have them done then it's on you.

 

Valve stems are easy to replace and should not get damaged replacing them. Keep drinking their Kool Aid and I'll save my money. Just because they "recommend" it doesn't mean it's required. If a technician can't make this simple change without tearing stuff up he/she shouldn't be working on vehicles. Good day.

Edit for a bit of follow up. Here is a pic right off of Discount's website. The only thing removed for a tire change is the valve stems. When changing wheels the whole TPMS sensor gets moved and the bottom black seal and sleeve/nut gets removed also. In the case of changing wheels a rebuild kit is a good idea. Changing tires not so much. Valve stems have been pulled and reused for years before TPMS was ever thought of. Just my opinion.

 

Ok, let me see if I can straighten out some of your confusion here for you. You are right that valve stems don't get damaged upon replacement; this is because they don't get reused. You're mistaking TPMS sensors for valve stems; they are not the same. A valve stem is simply a piece of rubber that is not rebuildable and therefore not reusable once removed from the wheel. Yes, valve stems have been pulled for years before TPMS was invented, but never reused.

A TPMS sensor has a metal valve stem attached to it and uses rubber grommets to seal it to the wheel, and are therefore rebuildable and reusable. The grommets are like any other seal/gasket, and can wear out, leak and require replacement.

You are correct that rebuilding the sensors is not required, hence the "recommendation".
