ECO Oil ??

What is it? Every brand seems to have a version of it out now. TV add's are starting to heavily advertise Eco oil and how "it will make the world breath easier". I call BS. What is it really? Sounds like a marketing campaign targeted for hippies...

 

Used oil that is re-refined. I.e. recycled oil.

 

Doesn't sound like something I should put in my truck

This is a for real question by the way. In the past few weeks every lube shop in town now has a "eco oil change deal" (i change my own) and I'm curious WTF is this crap? Everything on the internet is biased that my quick five minute google search found.

 

they take used motor oil and rerefine it, its the same as regular motor oil

 

There are enough other uses for used motor oil, it isn't worth re-refining and putting it back in the engine.

Another way of looking at it: You use about 1.25 gal of motor oil every 5000 miles. In that time you would have used about 260 gal of fresh, non-recycled gasoline.

 

supposedly, it's of the same quality as virgin oil. apparently, contrary to popular believe, oil doesn't break down like we think it does; it can be reused again. i am in favor of importing 1.25 gallons less oil from the desert each time I do an oil change; it's the patriotic thing to do

They refine crude, I'm sure they can refine used oil.
