Keyless Entry Conversion

PROJECT COMPLETE


I have a 2005 Tacoma PreRunner SR5 Regular Cab; I just finished adding OEM cruise and am interested in adding OEM Keyless Entry.

If you know of a write-up on this please provide me with a link or any other info you may have, I can't find much on it just others asking like myself.

After doing a little research it seems all I need is the door actuators, door wire harnesses, wireless receiver, and key fob.

The next step is finding a harness plug behind the glove box for the wireless receiver.




I received the power actuators and installed them last night; i really had to stretch the wires to plug them in, nothing to spare. I hit the lock button and it worked!
There was an unsuspected added bonus to this project: the dome light stays on after I shut the door for ~15 sec or untill I turn the key. This is great because the light would use to turn off as soon as I shut the door. You can imagine how annoying that is at night.

I don't have the plugs in my harness for this :-(

Does anyone have a part truck with this option that I could get the harness running the length of the dash- the green harness in the pic above? FML I'd have to replace the entire harness!

I'm looking at adding power locks and keyless to my regular cab as well. With the OEM parts what kind of prices have you found?

Next big question.. Even without the factory wire harness, would the wireless receiver only need +12v/ground? or is it more involved? My work comp won't let me see the wire diagrams you have up.

In my mind the all that would be needed:
R/L actuators and hardware to tie into the lock mechanism.
Wireless receiver/control module.

Wiring would involve:
+12v/ground to the control/receiver module.
two wire lead to each actuator.

What am I missing?

There should be a fuse location for the door locks in the fuse block even though we don't have locks from the factory. If we're lucky their is still wires running to that location. If not it would be easy to run constant +12v and a ground to that location, then tie into it with the control module.

We should be able to run the wiring for the actuators through the boot that the speaker wires are ran through. At worst this might cause the slightest interference in the speaker sound when the power locks are actuated.

Now the trick is to find quality actuators and a receiver/control module at a decent price.

I'll post up if I find anything that seems feasible! Let me know if you find OEM for decent pricing. I'd go look for a wrecked AC/DC in a junkyard. I'll have to look after my deployment is over.

thanks for your comment. yeah, aftermarket would be really easy, i already have an aftermarket alarm and all i would need would be two actuators and a relay [~$35] but i want oem if possible. i've been lucky and found the wireless receiver and door harnesses for $80 shipped! i got a new fob for ~$30. I can't find the actuators anywhere for under ~$100... i'm going to be patient and wait to get a deal on these somehow.

as far as i can figure, the receiver module doesn't control the locking/unlocking, it just relays the message to the ecu; the ecu tells the actuators to lock/unlock. I don't have an actuator yet and i can't even find a pic of one that shows what the wiring is like. I have a good pic of the receiver module from the fcc website from the trial tests they conducted. I can make out which pin is positive and negative but not much more after that. I hope to do this project with all correct oem parts, then figure out a "hack" of sorts for others to do with minimal parts.

 

I received the harness last week. I may have time to install it this weekend.

I installed the new harness. The install is easy. All the bolts to the upper/main dash are up front, minus one on the passenger side. Open the passenger door and look to the side of the dash, pop off that panel and there is the bolt. Once all the bolts are off, i'd say 8~10, just pull the dash forward. Don't forget the two bolts holding the passenger airbag in place - there's no need to pull the airbag from the back of the dash. To install the harness simply start from one end, I started with the passenger side but either side will work, and unplug one at a time while plugging the new plug in it's place. From beginning to end it took me ~3 hours.

Sorry, I don't have any pics, my camera has been screwed up for a few days now; i put in a charged battery but it cuts off after 2~3 sec as if the battery is dead - time for a new one, i've had this one for nearly 8 years; a fuji finepix z1, nice camera but a little dated now. I'm looking at the new Finepix x100; 3x the price of what i paid for the z1 but i like the retro feel/look. I'll more than likely end up getting another z series.

 

I finally bought door lock actuators! I found some on eBay, auto salvage for $75/each!
They should be here early next week. I should be able to have them in next weekend.
A few weeks ago I got a RS3200+ system; this was to be bought last but I got it for a price i couldn't pass up. I have it installed and works fine, all i need now are the actuators installed!

You are definitely dedicated, I would have went for the aftermarket kit out of pure lazyness.

 

And for the better remote range, reliability and more features for less money. You certainly are committed to having it factory man good job looks like it took you a lot of research to find all the parts.

 

The aftermarket actuators etc just seemed "jerry rigged", which i hate. Between this and the want to take on the challenge, here i am. I'm also a little ocd If I had an automatic I would probably have def went with the aftermarket alarm for the remote start.

Great job....what was the total cost?

 

~$450 and i used salvaged parts; actually, the alarm was new... and it took months/hours to do it for that price.
the #1 thing i would look for first is if you have the harness for the receiver behide your passenger airbag; if you do, this project could be a lot easier. the hardess thing to source is someone that will split the door harnesses and actuators from the doors- people generally try to sell the door with all included hardware, they don't like splitting it up.
good luck if you do try this; the only way i can see it being done quickly is if you throw money at it. if you want it done for just a few hundred you'd be lucky to get it done quicker than a few months
