I want to Brownell's OXPHO-BLUE my XD magazines.

i picked up my first XD on monday and as some of you do, i hate the chrome finish on my XD magazines. i was thinking about OXPHO-BLUEing them. has anyone done this to magazines? would it affect how the magazines slide out of the gun? do i need to sand them down first? is there a better solution than OXPHO-BLUE?

Search the aftermarket for a blued magazine before you destroy your factory ones. Just my $0.02

 

it's not that i specifically want a Blued magazine, i want a non-reflective magazine and i think bluing would be the closest thing from painting them. i wish the XD magazines came in black. i searched for other brands. i like the Mec Gar magazines. but i don't want to pay $38 for each magazine. plus, what would i do with my OEM magazines? i can sell them but i won't get what they are worth, they would be worth more to me to keep them.

 

Have you ever used that liquid blue before though? I think painting them would be more effective, personally, but I dont have much personal experience with it (one, because I've seen what a mess you can make of it, and two, I like my guns with wear on them) so hopefully someone else could add some input.

If I were you, Id get the mags. The more you have, the better.

 

nope, i've never used Oxpho Blue. i dont want to use paint because i dont want to add any layers. paint will rub off eventually and might gum up. it also might make the magazine a little too thick to slide out properly.

 

why does it matter what color your mags are?? no ones gonna see it when its in the gun...also if you put a substrate on the mags is it gonna cause them to stick? my M&P's have black mags and my 1911 guns have stainless

 

i want them in black for when they are sticking out 1" of my magazine pouch on my vest. it serves a home defense/ tactical purpose.

 

I don't know about a "home defense" purpose. This sounds more like a "I'm hiding on a hill trying to shoot someone important and I don't want the sun to glimmer off my magazine and tell the secret service I'm here" scenario. That said, if your magazines are so tight you worry about a thin layer of something causing them to not go in properly I would say you have bad mags. Paint, blueing, anodizing, etc all only add a couple thousands of an inch. Everything will wear down eventually, but by the time it wears enough to gum up your gun you should have cleaned it anyways.

Defense equipment to some guys becomes like jewelry and accessories to girls. At some point you start to look really silly.

 

I bought a black mag for my XD from academy. It doesn't have the little peep holes to show how many rounds u have left but it was 20 bucks.. I think it was a magpro or promag.. Not sure

i really don't see your point about reflectivity. are you going to have the whites of your eyes tattooed black and then about that heat signature you are giving off? ease off the C.O.D. and mountain dew and just be happy with the way the come.

if i were going to blue something i would hot blue instead of cold blue. I would check around and see if any gunsmiths in your area are setup for bluing. whichever one you choose just know that ANY blue will eventually wear off and you will have to do the same process again. That wear could be from being in a holster or in your case a mag pouch or doing reload drills.

yeah my gun store told me that Promag makes aftermarket mags and that they are crap so he suggested Mec Gar.

 

is there a way to darken the color permanently? there was something where this guy bbq'ed the metal on a gun part for about 30 min and immediately submerged it in motor oil. do you know of this? do you think it will work?
