When I took my CCW class the instructor told us if you shoot someone you are gonna get sued no matter what. He then said it's better to kill the perp and then kill his whole family to avoid the lawsuit. He was joking but we were all laughing, pretty much the truth though.

when I took my CCW Class the instructor said shoot to kill ( that way there is only one story; YOURS) and empty the mag so it looks like you panicked, one well placed shot looks like an assassination.
I carry a 10mm fusion 1911 that kid is lucky he got shot in the foot anywhere else and this story have a much different ending.

It would be interesting to know if the Perp was armed. He may have had time to ditch any weapons.

Was told the same thing in an insurance class I took in college, "If you get in an accident and injure some one seriously, you are better off just finishing them off, you will save yourself a lot of money and legal issues."

Paraphrased worlds from one of my college professors.
