Did you have to cut body mounts/frame?

How many of you had to cut your body mounts/frame to completely eliminate tire rubbing on 285/75/16s?

I just got a set of 285/75/16 Hankook Dynapro MTs mounted on wheels with 4.5" backspacing. Even after getting my wheels/tires aligned, both my front tires are rubbing on the body mounts/frame. Not sure how normal this is or if I have any other options.

 

most likely you'll have to trim the body mounts to rid the rubbing completly..there has been plenty of discussion. i think at TTORA somewhere is a pretty decent write up on exactly what and how.

when i get back from some errands i'll help and look for it, maybe we can get this taking care of before Calico..i'm off till Monday sucker..don't be jealous!!

 

Nice! That's what I'm trying to do. I don't want to go to Calico rubbing like crazy.

Get wheels with less backspacing...

Add a small body lift

Higher suspension lift

Do some research on how to adjust the steering stops...(if you can even do that on these trucks).

 

I know on 285's I got wheels with less backspacing like 4" and below to get away from the frame

 

Right now have 4.5" back spacing. So you guys are saying that If I run wheel spacers my rubbing should go away?

 

Hmm, if its rubbing the body mount I think the only way you're going to get away from that is to shave it a bit like guys do to fit 35's on a 6" lift

 

When does it rub and where on the tire?

 

NOPE! The BS Won't help.

The ideal is 4.5" BS. The cab mount is just a bad design.

You can't add more lift, unless you go with a DB set up. Or if you have a prerunner and can do the spindles.

There is no way you can adjust the steering, and even if you could your turning radius would really suck.

So the best option IF you want to run 285's ? Is to cut the cab mounts.
Or keep your truck on the street. Then you just need to trim some plastic.

Why wouldn't backspacing help? Any little bit is better than cutting body/cab mounts.

A small body lift is also better than cutting cab/body mounts.

Hell, if it were me....I'd drop down a tire size. There's no way in hell I'd cut body/cab mounts to accomodate tires. Cutting the truck is permanent. You can't take that back once you start cutting.

Lockers affect turning radious.....

 

Something else to consider...

Skinnier tires

 

Well the further you move the tire inwards you run the risk of rubbing on the UCA's.
The further outwards you will rub even more. (It's the outter edge of the tire that makes contact with the cab mounts.)
The amount that you would need to limit the steering in order for it Not to rub? Would make you truck almost useless.

But I guess you could tweak it to gain a bit more clearance? But not enough to make it worth the time.


The best answer is like you stated. Drop down a tire size.

For most people cutting the cab mounts is a good answer. But make sure you box it back up! You want to maintain the strength.

 

Fuck it... getting my cab mounts cut and plated at demello tomorrow. I already have the tires, and I wheel my junk pretty hard. I've already voided my warranty on everything except the engine and transmission. No reason to stop now. My truck is only 5 months old too.

Sounds like there could've been more research involved to prevent the rubbing from happening in the first place. But - I guess, if you gotta have those BIG tars, you gotta have 'em and are willing to do anything to stuff 'em under there.

I cringe at the thought of cutting cab/body mounts. Let it rub!! Rubber will fall off and eventually you won't have to cut anything (laugh)

 

No problem! Demello's will do a good job! It's only a small part of the cab mount bracket. Not that big of a deal.

No not really. It's just a 9 gal tank I got off EBay, the compressor I got from CostCo, and parts that I got from a local shop. I hard wired it direct to the battery.

Nothing to it really.

Oh? The brackets I had to weld up myself.

 

Sweet! you should do a write up. I have the same MV50 compressor. How long does that 9 gal tank last you? Can you fill all 4 tires off of it?
