Experience with Pop Top Campers?

Has anyone had a Pop Top camper in their rig?

I have a Camper Shell on right now...




But have been taking a lot of fishing trips with a few people with all of our gear...3 boats and fly rods. It'd be cool to be able to cook and sleep a couple of people without any trouble.

I attached the image below..It seems like a good price and is only 3 hours from me.

Any Pros/Cons? Does the gas milage go to crap? Are they hard to remove?

I don't see why you couldn't. I would definitely want to get some heavy duty leaf packs first tho!

 

That camper looks too big for the truck it is on. It looks like it is hanging off the back about 18+ inches. I would expect to lose 3-6mpg with that setup because of the aerodynamics. Removal depends on if it has outriggers. Some have arms that pull out and a telescoping leg that comes down to support it so you can drive in and out. Others must be lifted on and off each time. I vote add a RTT. That camper looks huge and tacky IMO.

 

I have got an All Terrain Campers model Bobcat for my 2011 4x4 DC SB. I really like it. I am going to make a fairing to help address mpg loss. Mine does hang out to the edge of the tailgate. On a long bed you are flush I believe. It weighs in about 800 pounds. I have the rear spring TSB and firestone ride-rites and it works great.

Another option is the Flip-Pac. I think a roof top tent mounted on one of those racks that goes over the bed would work well too. The tent would not be above the truck's roof line when folded down and you would still have the bed for storage.

I just cant imagine having to tow that thing up trails..lol unless i had a crawl box..wouldn't be too hard to make tho. Plenty of stuff i could grab around here to start with as a frame.

 

still..its another set of wheels you have to worry about pullin up over a rock while maybe trying to go over one on another set...idk..seems to defie my logic..haha

 

we get shit done, and live by if it ain't broke, don't fix it haha But we come up with some cool stuff..and bad..haha

 

Popup campers are great but get one that is the right size for your truck.

I had a pop up truck camper that weighed about 1000 lbs dry in my 09 duramax and I lost about 5mpg when driving around with the camper on the truck. I would definitely get some air bags or something for the rear suspension if you are going to run around with that much weight in the back of the Tacoma. Just my $.02.

 

Desials tho..way more torque then we have. Plus he had to gun it like the entire time..just no fun lookin to me..

 

I do pretty good with 7ft a popup on the back of my doublecab. Gas mileage with camper is about an all around 14 mpg on trips. Around town without the camper isn't much better around 15mpg.

Iv'e been on some pretty rough trails with it. I run airbags, bilsteins, lifted the front 2 1/2", and have boxed in the frame because the airbag brackets put alot of strees on a small area of the frame.
