just got my 2.7 back rebuilt and installed

Good to know another taco is back on the roads.

What was the problem with it?

 

how many miles before the rebuilt? my brother did his '02 over the summer at 245k miles.

 

i had a balance shaft bearing go bad, just reving it high while i had this insane bro lean going on, started ticking so i shut it off, big error on toyota for these motors, the front bearings on the balance shafts have oil galleries but the back bearing dont, just supposed to get splashed from the oil pan, so got the balance shaft delete kit from LC engineering along with a rebuild kit, had the block bored .30 and crank turned .10, fly wheel turned and stage 3 clutch and motor mounts, need to do some 4:88 gears and a locker now.

 

What size tires you got under that thing? Looks good

Go there and listen to the video, is that the ticking your truck made?

What you described sounds like the problem I've had with my truck for over 30k miles

 

that could very well be it! mine had a wierd tapping couldnt tell if it was coming from the intake, exhaust, engine or transmission! but that bad bearing made the whole motor lag in power due to the secondary timing chain being in sync with the main timing chain

 

That's really weird. I put a stethescope on it and it sounded louder at the top end closer to the front compared to anywhere else. And when we pulled the motor one of the tensioners to the timing chain for the balance shaft was broken and the chain made a slap noise like in the video which is why we replaced them. After reading what you described I feel like that could very well be what's wrong with my truck. I've driven mine with the noise for over 30k and no problems and no lack in power.

 

nice truck!! what did the rebuild end up costing? i've got a '96 w/a bad 2.7 motor and i think it's the same issue, it broke two harmonic balancer's and the oil pump before the timing chain seized up (not even sure if it's rebuildable), i found a 2.4 for 500.00 w/88k miles on it, but not sure if there interchangeable

 

i think the 2.4 internals are different, just the block itself is the same. i paid $500 to machine shop for putting in new freeze plugs, counterbalance delete bearings, boring .30, turning the crank .10, and turning the fly wheel. then the engine kit was $400 from LC Engineering, and the counterbalance delete kit was another $100, and $500 labor to the mechanic for doing it on the side, plus 2 motor mounts $80 and a new clutch $160, right around $1800

if i had to do it again, i would go the ebay route, with a warranty, rather have a motor thats never been opened up

 

Actually the rear bearing IS internally lubricated (I know, commenting on an old thread, but still on subject of the balance shaft delete).
The balance shaft itself has a center-line hole drilled in it, and lubrication oil that is forced into the front bearing passes into the center-line, then out a small hole in the shaft to lubricate the rear bearing.

 

Good work on this...I would much rather rebuild an existing motor than buy a used or rebuilt with unknown history and problems.

Now, at $500, did the mechanic really make any money off the job? Normally I would have the machine shop reassemble the motor for me and I would do the install.
