What about the spare? (Changing tire sizes)

I currently have 265/65R17 tires that I'm planning to replace with 265/70R17 tires. There is a 1.05" difference in diameter.

What do folks commonly do about their spare tire?
I guess what I'm hoping for is a way around having to spend another $220 for the fifth one.

Any opinions? If this is one of these things where I just have to suck it up and do it, please tell me too.

But yeah, my actual spare is (minus 200 miles) a brand new tire.

I figured if I can leverage it then why not.

 

yeah but it might be a good idea to have a matching spare though...i am looking into getting a matching spare cause the difference in tire size is a little extreme lol. are you gonna get some ATs or MTs or what?

 

Probably Duratracks. I'm 90% ready to pull the trigger. I have until the 5th before one of the rebates expires

ETA: the remaining 10% is due to the 265/285 decision. I always have a problem making up my mind on expensive decisions lol

 

haha yeah i hear ya...i love my 285's and they fill out the wheel wells really nice...just remember that you have to trim lol

 

Not to hijack my own thread, but I thought my spidertrax and the TT lift pretty much took care of the need to trim?

 

i have spidertrax up front, billies on .85 with eibachs, and still had a good bit of trimming to do

 

I should have made a point at the URE meet to have a closer look at everyone's setup. Anyway, if I go with 285's I pretty much have no choice but to replace my spare. (so, and now I'm back on my own subject lol)

 

its all good man lol and if you do get a 285 spare you will need to cut the brackets out that keep the stock spare from swinging around

when i went up in size i traded mine to a tire shop for the size i needed plus cash. They were willing to negotiate, it worked out

 

Wow! I'd be glad if they did a 1:1 swap. How in the world did you manage to get cash out of it? Good idea though. Will definitely consider that.

 

i wish i got money out of the deal, they had a goodyear tire, used but i very good shape, they wanted $65, i told them $30 plus my perfectly good spare....they took it and mounted and balanced the new tire

 

I would get a full sized spare if you can afford it. I have a matching spare and wheel for both of my trucks.

I always like to be prepared, and this way if I'm far from home and on a trip/vacation I don't have to waste 1 or more of my days running around looking for tire/wheel combo. I would say this is especially important if the diameter of your spare is different (width not so important).

 

New spare or used spare? How about that decision?
