Sounds like it's not a HAM frequency.

There are various bands available around the area of HAMs FM 2meter band.

Its not a HAM frequency but my understanding is it is accessable by a HAM radio. We were told to watch what we say because of local HAMs have been trying to get us in trouble.

Then you can probably listen but not transmit on that frequency using your HAM radio.

until we get the actual frequencies of that repeater we can't positively answer your question. but, it sounds like it's a GMRS repeater. and even then, technically you still need a license for use on that band plan. GMRS licenses require a fee paid to the FCC. that fee is 75 bucks and good for 5 years i believe.

Its actually a Canadian ski resort. I'll talk to the company that set up our radios and repeaters. They also sell HAM radios I believe. its not a big deal. it would just be nice to have. what would be the best way to tell??

During your test I hope they don't ask you a question about type accepted radios.

The Freq is the only way to tell. If you are acting under the order of management than you are fine.

Anyone can listen in to any freq, there is no way to prevent that without getting into encrypted radios (not a ham thing).

The answer legally no, it is not type accepted by the FCC and with out modifying the radio it will no operate in that frequency range.

The radios are business band their frequency is above the 2 meter ham band on VHF and above the ham band also on UHF you can not use a ham radio on those bands.

OK  I have heard of people communicating with police on police frequencies in emergencies so I figured this was sort of the same thing.
