No our repeater is licensed by the Canadian version of the FCC for us. It is not a HAM repeater it is strictly used for the day to day operations of the resort and for ski patrol emergencies. The people here are weird they like to control everything. our rent-a-cops act like real cops, and HAMs like to police all frequencies apparently. By watching what we say, they meant to not swear etc.

 

if lets say that repeater is licensed under a business class license or even a GMRS license then HAMS have no authority over that frequency.

They is a caveat with radio use but only in dire emergences as in life and limb and it pertains to all radio frequencies but your ham radio would have to be illegally modified in order to do that. What the emergency usage is,is using a police radio to call the police all though you are not licensed to do so.

 

why is it starting to sound fishy?? I am part of the ski patrol, naturally we use radios. Because of the amount of space in a ski resort and the fact that we have trees n such blocking our line of site we also use repeaters. I want to get into HAM eventually, and I don't know the rules yet so I was asking for clarification. I would of liked to have a radio in my vehicle, somewhat like how a firefighter has a radio in his POV. Mostly to be tuned in before I arrive at the resort so I know what I am getting into. If ski patrol gets a call as I am arriving I would know that I need to hurry once I get there to be able to assist in call. I just wanted to know if I was able to legally use a HAM radio to listen in and possibly communicate with my fellow patrollers if need be. An example would be I am down the road from the resort and a call is made to the patrol. I would announce that I am arriving and request a snowmobile pickup to go to the scene or that I will wait at the clinic.

 

Frankly hams do not care what any one says on freqs that are not theirs it not their problem my point is you can not use a ham radio on an out of band freq. I know it is done but that does not make it right we have enough problems on the ham bands with out adding to it. If you work for some one their radio license covers a number of users and you are licensed to use them under their license. You are allowed to listen to any thing that is broadcast (except cell phones) on any radio that can receive it the only limitation is repeating what you have heard to the public as in I heard so and so was screwing her boss.

 

I know most don't really care, it was brought up at one of our meetings. And the way people are here I believe it. I was just wondering if since I was already covered by a license to use that frequency if I was able to do so on a HAM radio.

 

Ham radio rules are some what strange we as hams can turn a commercial radio into a ham radio but not turn a ham radio into a commercial radio it's an FCC thing. I have two ham band repeaters running right now that were state police car radios in their former life.

 

It seems the more I read on ham radios the more confusing it gets.

 

Going to an amateur radio club meeting tomorrow - should be pretty interesting. I can't decide if I want a CB, HAM or both...

 

Get both...the test is realy easy to pass...just lastnight I started my study for the general class, passing the tech was easy

 

Go with the ham stuff you'll never pick up a CB mike again after you find out how well the ham radios work.

Once you feel ready to take your test, go to the ARRL website to find a test. Tests are usually about $15 or $16.

 

Agreed, once I got my Yaesu I didn't bother with a CB.

I keep a small Cobra handheld CB in the truck, though. More people talk on CBs than hams during roadtrips. That's really the only time it comes in handy.

Oh and my ham radio got stolen in January anyway.
