Momma wants a gun!

Not a 22 either! Large caliber, but not too hard on the kick and revolver only. Any recommendations on anything?

She liked the S&W model 57 but the .41 mag ammo is expensive and hard to come by. So something a little cheaper and easier to find on the ammo would be nice.

 

Take her to a range and let her shoot whatever gun she thinks she will like. Before you do that how much gun safety training does she have? You need to have her take one my local DNR has classes every other weekend for free. Going to the range is your best bet it's worth the ~200 to shoot every gun they have and then decide.

 

What's she looking to do with it? Home use only, carry, both, etc? In a general use wheelgun I'm partial to a 3" .38/.357 with +P .38s in it. The lightweight guns such as S&W's Airweight series can be a handful with full power rounds; they aren't pleasant to shoot for more than a few cylinders at a time. .44 special is still a very good round, but they're harder to find and I'd rather have the compact size of the .38 myself.

As noted, have her try a few guns that she thinks she may like then buy the one she's most comfortable with. I'd recommend a handgun class too; not just a CCW class but an actual defensive class taught by someone respectable.

im pretty sure she knows how to handle a gun. She has a .38 special and .243 rem and also a 9mm

neither of us are noobs to guns, so skip that part. Im wanting opinions on whats a good hand gun that has a decent caliber to it but wont knock her on her butt like a desert eagle.

Dont question mommas shooting ablitites its for when shes out in the mountains if she comes across a bear or anything we have rifles and shot guns.

p.s. she got her first gun at 10 it was a 22

 

Exactly like said above. Take her to the range and let her shoot everything you can get your hands on. I would recommend a .357 for caliber, just because you can load it up with .38spl for the range, but then with some .357+p+ if you want to get nasty. I'm slow on my phone, forgive me.

 

^^ What he said. Everyone has an opinion and they are all worth what you pay for them. What it really boils down to is if someone doesn't feel comfortable / enjoy shooting a gun they won't practice enough to be proficient.

Get her a 12 gauge shotgun

 

this isnt for play and shes not going to need to shoot it much if her life depends on it shes comfortable shooting anything.

mainly she wants to be able to slow down a bear, or a mountain kitty should she come across one.

357 mag should do the job but has a decent kick. 45 acp has a good thump to it as well but will be semi auto platform not revolver

 

ok, so we know how to use them, but i dont know a lot about them. I dunno what all that means.

she wants a revolver, shes picky.

no 9mm, she had one and got rid of it. shes a lefty too if that makes any difference.

 

i personally love the .40. gives you 9/10 of the stopping power of a .45 with the kick (as in little to none) of a 9mm. it's so easy to shoot accurately. i keep one by my bedside to protect my family (among others). easy to find ammo (as in always in stock at walmart). i buy the fmj for target practice because its cheap, but keep the good stuff at the ready for when necessary. you can also find some nice smaller .40's by various manufacturers which might be easier/more convenient for your wife to carry.

9mm xd-m, or smith and wesson m&p. I'm a firm believer in shot placement over power. Take her to a range that will allow you to rent some weapons to shoot, shoot 9mm,.380, .40, and i doubt she would want a .45 and stick with what she can accurately handle. Again, people brag about "knockdown power" when i have investigated more .22 caliber shootings and deaths than 9mm, .40, or .45 put together.

 

I stand by my .357 advice. .357+p steel core jacketed for bear, for penetration. And .357hp for kitties.

shes a pretty badass woman, you guys wouldnt be questioning a guy like this, i just need some opinions. she had her mind made up on the model 57 .41 mag s&w until we found out ammo was expensive and hard to come by. she likes the look of it too.
