Long drive checklist

PCS'ing from AZ to NJ, doing a partial DITY, so Im driving the truck cross country. Truck has 51k miles just did 50k check up (at dealer, I know, I know) brand new set of tires, anything I need to address look at before I venture out on my 2800 mile journey? Thanks guys!

not sure what kind of tires you have but you may hit snow this time of year ? my guess is you will shoot across I-70 then head up i-75 ? man i hate that drive . texas is the worst .

 

Check fluids, tire pressure, belts, hoses, spare tire, I suggest that you go through a practice tire change to ensure that all your stuff is working correctly other than that drive safe! Also food, drinks, and good music will make the trip a lot better.

 

a big cooler and the right mind set....ive done NJ to Chicago many of times and for me and my taco its a cooler in the bed couple cans of dip and the "im going to drive this in one day lets move" mentality. never had any issues on 900+ miles of driving just sit back and realize you are going to be behind the wheel for a long time and enjoy the picture in front of you...soak it all in take time to observe and the drive will be a good one....Sorry its NJ not much fun here (In my opinion) traffic can be nuts here. Got some Rocky Mountain All terrains, nice and grippy.

 

Did that a couple times going from college in Missouri to PA, did it in one day too, think it was 13 hours, so exhausted, but accomplished it.

 

O ya when you get to NJ make sure you have a bunch of quarters i remember there being a toll about every 10 feet lol

 

Sounds good! Thanks. Yep just installed my new head unit with an ipod hook up, so let the tunes prevail, maybe some books on tape we will see. Cooler is an amazing idea, never thought of that.

 

depends on the road you take....I-95 (or as we call it 295) is toll free.....the chicago sky way is worse IMO

 

yea its a mountain to climb...PA is a fun drive and OH and IN suck...IL is ok...Mcguire AFB...?

Driving from VA to CO in three weeks, watching this thead closely.

 

Indeed, also heard it referred to as My-Dick-Hurts, since is McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Joint base. Cant wait to move into my $1100 a month one bedroom apt, lol. Could have a small mansion for that here.

 

I lived in PHX for a while then FL for 15 years hated it . i have done the FL to Cal / OR trip way to many times .

 

The cooler comment reminds me of the trip to Key West I took with my friends when I was younger. We were all loaded up in my Mom's Tahoe 8 people with 2 weeks worth of luggage on the roof and a cooler behind the 3rd row seats. I drove the entire thing with out stopping but 4-5 times. When we got there I threw the keys to the valet and told him to park it while I hit the beach with a beverage of choice which my friends had plenty of in the cooler and on the way down. Damn I'd love to re-live that 2 weeks

 

Do you have a GPS? I was stationed at McGuire for 4.5 years and there are no visible lanmarks in that part of the state. Its' out in the sticks and a ways away from the highway. If you don't know where you're going, you can get easily lost. I had a friend who got lost coming off I-295 and he ended up in Cape May...lol

As for the tolls, no joke, depending on which route you're coming from the South, you'll pay a pretty penny coming over the Delaware Memorial Bridge. If you can, get an EZ Pass so you won't have to wait in the toll lanes. Bring a cooler like everyone else said, and I recommend a case of water, baby wipes and a tool bag with emergnecy supplies in it and some simple tools.

 

John Taco my guess is you will be going I-70 to CO . You will hit snow for sure this time of year .

 

where are you moving too? I live 30 mins south of all that... 1100 a month is normal..a bad area gets you 600-800 a month...
