Access is a great inventory tool for my train hobby. I can set it up for each item and include a picture of the piece I purchased. Access is very powerful.

Access is great if you know how to use it.

I just hate it in an office setting because people use it and have no clue about it. They write some totally messed up crap and then get mad at me when it tanks the server when it runs.

    Should they be using SQL?

At my last job the IT staff removed all support for Access databases and told the internal customer that we would only support SQL. We also had a dedicated team to set up SQL databases. However the customer had to submit changes and wait for them to be implemented, which usually happened within a month.

Thank goodness I use it for simple tasks. It is just so easy to run searches and to link photos.

Yes, SQL is the preferred enterprise tool. Most places won't support Access because of those issues. It is a much more powerful tool.

Access is perfect for what you use it for.

I inherited a mess at that job. We had basically 3 companies that merged into one company. I had 3 different toll free number databases with a total of over 10,000 toll free numbers. The office in Salt Lake City used Access and the senior tech was holding on to that application come hell or high water. I had to force her to work the the Database department to get everything in SQL.

The kicker is that she is now the IVR administer and uses the SQL database to move the IVR treatment of toll free numbers to suit the needs of the company. IE: Holiday and disaster routing.

    Actually yes.

I was replaced with 2 directors and 2 managers. Power changes in a corporate life can be a bitz.

I really do not miss the job, as it ended up, at all. The new CIO and VP were both not the nicest of persons. Unfortunetly the VP that brought me over was fired by the new CIO and the rest was all history. It took them 4 years to finally abolish my position.

    I got a great severance package. :D
