A true 10mm round is a .40 significantly hopped up like a .40 +p+p+ even regular 10mm loads pack a significant punch, up to 200 ft/lbs more than a .45 acp depending on ammo of course. It's a step below a .41 magnum and better than a .357. the round also averages around 13-14" of ballistic gel penetration, that is quite a bit of stopping power. I'm leaving it at that.

So, was this related to Black Friday? If so then there is one more reason to quit that shit. Also, I have to be honest here. When people act like animals, .....hold on, if the guy wouldn't have had a gun would he be dead? Probably. What in the hell makes people think they can smash and grab anything they want? Why do people act this way over an electronic do-dad that will be out of date before they get home? And if it was me I would have unloaded 20 rounds and then throw my empty pistol at the ass.

just saying... 8 shots close quarters (I'm assuming, its a cell store) at multiple targets and the only hit is in the shin

time to invest in a shot gun

either way... a hit is better than a miss

Wut? I can tell you I'd rather be on the stand justifying a double tap to center mass than a 16-round volley out of my G19. Cases are made against cops all the time for extreme round count when they empty, say, a G22 full of 40 cal hollowpoints at a perp.

Engage until you feel the threat is down or gone, assess and reengage if needed. That may be a mag full but I wouldn't recommend emptying a mag on principle. You may even need those rounds for an unseen threat.

1 example please of cases made against cops and "extreme" round counts

There is existing case law (i'll have to dig it up) that shows that during a panic shooting situation, it is normal for people to pull the trigger until the gun stops firing

There are also documented cases of officers going thru a full combat reload and firing several shots out of their second magazine

I dont feel bad for the burglars. Stupid kids trying to steal something that wasn't theirs to start with?

Hopefully the OP's friend doesn't get in too much trouble seeing he was defending his business from 9 intruders (possibly)

    Just one? Sure:

    http://www.opposingviews.com/i/excessive-force-nj-cops-fire-39-rounds-at-unarmed-man

Specifically pay attention to the following:

The three-judge appeals panel found that the officers had justification to use deadly force in response to Eric Quick's "abrupt, threatening movement," but the number of bullets fired may have been excessive.

I'm not saying it's right, but round count does sometimes play a part in whether or not a case is prosecuted. And I can't believe anyone, especially an LEO, would advocate "emptying the mag so it looks like you panicked."

FTR That just says it's possible, and it's a civil suit (which you're going to face regardless, if you shoot someone)

I am NOT advocating emptying the mag to make it appear as if you panicked

Just saying that many times adrenaline, and tunnel vision will prevent someone from seeing and comprehending that the threat has been eliminated

BTW, thank you for actually having information to back up what you say

    Further edit

I think, from that short news article, the excessive force claim comes from the 11 rounds that hit him in the back which is perfectly understandable

if your'e going to quote me please quote the rest of what was said. I was told that by my CCW instructor. I'm not saying he was right or that it's a good idea to empty a mag to prove innocence, I understand what you are saying though. On the flip side I do not carry a double stack 9mm or .40 that holds 15+ rounds, That would be damn near two full mags in my 10mm 1911 depending on the mag 8 rounds would easily be justifiable.
