Using My Winch!

Ok so i am about to mount a winch on my truck and want to know what kind i should look at? I have a warren heavy duty front bumper that it will mount to perfect. Also When using it do i let the winnch do the pulling or should i tighten it up and use the truck to back up?

 

Never use the winch like a tow strap. Let the winch do the pulling. If you are pulling yourself out you can drive the truck to help the winch, but if you are pulling someone else, just use your truck as an anchor and let the winch pull the load, and the truck you are pulling can drive some to help out too.

 

Also carry a chain in your truck for wrapping around trees. If you just wrap the cable from the winch around the tree the winch will never wind up the same way again and the cable will last longer. Hopefully that makes sense.

 

All good advice so far. Do consider in getting a synthetic rope line instead of the steel rope. The synthetic line is a billiongazillion times safer then steel, easier to work with, less weight, and it floats too.

 

Back to the original question regarding the type of winch..a Warn 8000 or Smitybilt XC8 should be just right for your truck. Anything over a 10,000lb rating will be overkill. The Smitybilt is the more economical brand and the Warn would be the premium brand. There is also Milemarker that should be considered as well.

All of the above are items to have IMO along with a good quality tow strap, a hilift, and several D-shackles in your recovery kit.

i have the Viking rope on my MonkeyCrawler and i have MasterPull synthetic rope on my taco..no issues with either brand so far, and trust me. i have put both to some good hard work haha

above picture on my Jeep for about 6 years, never let me
down, and it's very fast.

 

Ill only use a Warn. ive had horrible luck with other brands ive tried.

 

i just bought the warn m8000 used it once already to pull an old lady out at the mall

in all seriousness synthetic rope is next on my list as i had the feeling the steel cable will eventually chop me in half. just stretching the steel cable and re-wrapping it on the drum the first time gave me the willy's.

does the synthetic cable need to be wrapped as perfect as the steel or can there be little spaces in between the strands. the only reason i ask is when re-spooling my steel rope i tried to get it in there as best i could just wondering what the actual advantages where of the synthetic over the steel besides the obvious safety reasons and weight.

lol warn wants a ton of money for their synthetic rope lol it costs more than the freaking winch it's going on lol.

 

no, the synthetic does not have to be all perfect..as long as its wrapped evenly all the way across the drum. you can find synthetic rope cheaper. check out 4WP or even ebay. AllPro sells Master-Pull for $259, and that's what i have on my Taco

 

i'd say go with warn or superwinch op both are really nice.

the warn is supposed to be the premium brand and quality but, to my surprise none of the warn solenoids are sealed up so that was something i had to do myself. the super winches on the other hand are all sealed if that is a concern of yours.

i saw the superwinch talon series of winches in person and they scream quality but, they are pricey. some guy's on here have nothing positive to say about smitty built while others claim them to be very reliable and an overall great value so for what thats worth.

imo warn or superwinch because if you actually need to winch yourself or someone else out of a bad spot it would really suck to have it not work when you need it thats what justified the larger price tag in my mind.

i'm going to need to switch over to derlin rollers as well i guess but, hell with it lol.

i never had any experience with winching before now but, we have all heard the horror stories however rare they are about wire ropes breaking and i could just imagine what that amount of kinetic energy could do to either myself or my truck yikes. the 260 for the master pull your recommending seems justified to me however the 900 dollar warn synthetic rope seems to be just a tad over priced imo lol.

btw when one purchases the arb snatch block do we get a big breasted arb model as well

if so i'm returning my warn snatch block and getting that fancy polymer one

oh and thank you every idea i got i found on this site pretty much jesus christ if i had a time machine i would go back a year and a half and not let my past self discover tw at all. lol that way i would have a lot more money in my bank account

 

you don't have to switch over to delrin rollers off you get a harse fairlead instead of a roller fairlead. aside from having a smooth surface for the synthetic rope it does not stick out as for as the roller faileads so there is potentially more clearance when on the trails..
