Ok so if it keeps blinking turn the wheel slightly idle forward and it will lock/unlock every time! I have a 2012 too and it works. I was soo frustrated but now I'm happy lol:D

    I think I've got what you're asking...

Yes, if the spinning axle/side-gear is on the same side of the differential as the locking collar, that means the side gear on that side is turning at the same rate as the carrier and locking collar. Since the splines weren't lined up to begin with, and everything is rotating at the same speed, they won't line up until the rotational speed of the axle and side gear is different from that of the carrier.

On paper, yes that works. But it'd be faster, easier, and safer to just take a strap. I'd only go this route if I was alone, stuck, couldn't get the locker to engage, couldn't stack some rocks, and had no winch.

that would be very unsafe to do as the tire would be spinning as you or someone else trying to grab hold of it ...

another thing, would it be safe to operate a jack in that manner, to have both tires off the ground. . think about this...in the time it takes to bust out the jack and get the other wheel up in the air you can slap on a recovery strap and be pulled out if you really were in that situation

Cool, thanks guys. Yes I agree it's not a good idea but the concept makes more sense to me now.

If I had to do it, I would do it in 4Lo with the truck in Neutral and the engine off. Preferably with the truck tied to something via strap or chain.

That said, I'd endeavor not to do it.

yes, that's the way to do it uh ha.

if you can, find a open dirt field or a wide dirt road where you can practice engaging the locker . not only will the light stay steadily on once it "locks" you can sometimes feel a slight "clunk" or sometimes you can hear it engage and disengage. most of the time i don't even look at the DIFF LOCK light..i just go by the feel cuz im cool like that haha:cool: j/k

    eLocker delete mod...

I know I do use ATRAC from time-to-time (cause I have it). Elockers are okay but I went through my last one a couple of months ago. Now I think 8.4 with an ARB and a front ARB will last a bit longer than the 8 eLocker (wish me luck :)).

I just used ATRAC and switched to both ARB lockers (after exceeding what the ATRAC would handle) in Death Valley - really it was outside of DV in the surrounding BLM land. There are no trails in DV that are currently open that couldn't be successfully assaulted with an ATRAC equipped truck. :)

And in neither of those cases would I have to perform the task he's asking about...

While we're briefly (apparently) on a civil discussion of A-TRAC: It's a very good traction system. I'd take it over every traction aid out there except front and rear lockers, and that includes rear locker only. But it has its weaknesses and faults like any other system.

Now, to find some money for that front locker and crawlbox...

    oh, a crawlbox eh?! :D

as i have said plenty of times myself in plenty other ATRAC/locker discussions ...ATRAC is a great system for easy/intermediate terrain. i have never once said anything negative about it.

you will have to determine which side needs to lock. mine works when i turn left and bring it back straight. everytime it will lock in. and as i do it more and more it gets easier. so play around with it but the key is really to push the button and if it doesnt lock immediately it must not be aligned so turn the wheel one way or another and then back straight and it will work every time. now that they explained it to me it works every time!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D:woot:

It will happen, the only Q is when.

Same. I've said plenty of negative things about the people that take it too far, but not the system itself.

That said, there's a ton of other options for traction, and folks with stock trucks (cough) need to be careful what they say about these options. It's not possible to push these traction systems to the limit without other significant modifications to the vehicle. It gets tiresome.

But then, I'm preaching to the choir here.

How did it jump from a new Tacoma owner trying to figure out if his locker is engaged or not, to another tutorial on traction control?! There are threads for traction control, and there are threads for other topics... This is a thread that falls in 'other'.

Okay I can help bring us back on course...

Has anyone cracked one of these 2010-2012 elockers open? Supposedly, the newer elocker has a larger ring gear.

    Never met David_K before eh?

    The "8.2".

Frankly, thicker is the concern more than larger diameter.
