GEAR CHANGES

ok getting a 2002 tacoma with 6'' lift and 315/75R16 tires it has stock gearing with a v-6 truck has 123,000 on it well im going to upgrade the gears to either 4;11 or 4;56 im going to tow jet skis and be on the highways just wanted to know what your thoughts were on the best i think 4;11s and if you guys know a good place what kind gears u want with and prices and kit neeeded to to do the installs ??? thanx im in south jersey near philly pa

Is the truck manual or Auto.

With the 35s, best to run a Manual with 4.56 or 4.88, Auto 4.88 or 5.29

4.88s or 5.29s i would go with 5.29s for towing with 35s. about 800-900 rpm difference from stock with 5.29s, 4.88s about 500 rpm higher. i am regearing with 4.88s w/ 285s rpm @ 70mph should about 2500

 

I would agree, 5.29s with the auto and 35s

I have 33s and 4.56s with a manual and kind of wish I had gone with 4.88s

 

what about the motor screaming on the highway ? im use to going like 80 mph when im not towing .......... thanx for everyones input

 

It doesn't scream when doing 80, its just over 3000 rpm, but if your worried about it go with the 4.88s.

Check out this if you haven't already. Edit: after putting your numbers in, for 80 mph, 4.88s with be at 2700 rpm, 5.29s -2900 rpm.

I would say 5.29s if your towing.

VVVVVV As for 4.56s with 35s Don, thats just silly, no where near getting you back to stock gearing.

 

4:88s if youre going in the mud, otherwise 4:56

 

i would say with an auto 4.88

but try it stock once there is only a 500-600 rpm change going from 4.10 to 4.88

if you take od off on interstate it would give you about same rpm change as 4.88's then you can decide if its too high rpm for you

i seen the code on the door it says BO3A so does that mean that its an 8" ring gear and has 4:10s in it now ??? in want to be sure its 2002 v6 with an automatic in in it trd model...............

have another question talked to a 4x4 shop that does this work for over 20 years he said not to changed the gears cause the front rear will snap the ring gear with the gear change since the ratio will be changed the new ring gear and pion is smaller and with such bigger tires onm it the pion will snal since its smaller than stock ..........???????? input on this thought please

 

I would find another shop that knows what they are talking about, ie toyotas.

Yes there is a small chance of that happening, I've never seen it. Just get good quality gears, like yukon or nitro.
There are plenty of people running 5.29s with 35" tyres and no problems.

I ran 4.56 and 4.88's before and was very hard on the trucks, broke cv joints but never a ring gear

also duty .. yes you should have 4.10 gears in your truck right now
