Bass enclosure

May have been answered a hundred timesalready..... but here goes aanyway............What Subwoofer enclosure will work with a 2011 TRD Sport Double cab with little or no cutting. Just looking for something that will easily fit. I am no audiophile. Also what sixe speaker with suggested enclosure. Not looking for top of the line just "pretty good" any suggestion would be appreciated.

Most of the ones I've seen were custom made but I'm sure you can get aftermarket ones now.

 

Crutchfield has a JL audio with two ten inch subs. $699.00 Sounds expensive but i've never shopped for this before. Does the price seen right for a drop in unit that won't require too much hacking behind the seat?

Most I've seen require removing storage bins in back and chopping off child seat restraints and bending other brackets. I had one of those under the seat type box but it died after a couple months. I decide to make my own because I don't want to chop up my truck.

 

The JL claims to fit right in. I'll keep my fingers crossed as I'm always looking for the easy way out. Besides JL has a pretty good reputation.

I was on the same hunt as you. I couldnt find anything. I wanted something that fit behind the driver side but didnt have to remove the plastic to fit. I ended up making my own box. I had an old truck speaker that i scavenged for the sub. I didnt want to buy sub for a box i didnt know that worked. I never made one before and after two attempts got one that works pretty good. Im far from a professional on this, just had some extra time and all the parts and tools one weekend so i gave it a go. The dimensions are most likely smaller than recommended for the woofer i used. It fits in the space nice and snug and i didnt have to bolt it down. So far it doesnt sound too bad, Im still messing with it. Im wondering if i got a shallow mount sub if it would sound better. The current sub is scavenged from and old pioneer truck 8" box.

 

It most definitely does not drop right in, and will involve a lot of cutting to the plastic. It is a great option, but for the money there are plenty of other great options.

Another option, though significantly lower quality, would be a powered sub such as the Sound Ordinance B-8PT. This could easily be placed in multiple locations in the cab that require no cutting AND would not require an external amp.

Best option would be to send Mr. Marv an email. From earlier conversations I learned that he can build a box for a shallow mount sub that can be installed with no cutting and without removing the plastic storage liners.

 

You have several options.

The JL box/subs was mentioned, but that's a pretty expensive solution.

You also have cheaper boxes from Soundoffaudio, Supercrewsound, and eBay. These all work without cutting, just removal of one or both of the storage bins. The child hooks and the protrusions for the bin mounts can stay stock. The double sub boxes from the previous can be modified to fit in the passenger side, leaving you the drivers side bin. This is what I have, I cut off the passenger side sub box and mounted the board/sub box in the passenger side. I have an ArcAudio sub that is fed from the rear channels of an RF amp.

There is *********, but you might want to research the vendor on here first, they have quite a bit of bad press.

Then you can upgrade to a Mr.Marv box if you want to spend more, but get a higher quality box along with recommendations for what would work for your listening habits from someone who knows Tacomas and sound.

Most of these boxes are for a 10" sub, and will be limited by mounting depth. The boxes are usually limited to 5.5 to 6.0" of sub mounting depth. No sub recommendations from me, just need to narrow down your search based on mounting depth and $$$.

BTW, don't forget to take into account where you want the amp to go.

Lastly, there are self-contained sub/amp units from Kenwood, Sound Ordinance, Focal, Infinity that also would work. All depends on your requirements (how tuned is your ear, what $$$ you gotta to spend,,,,).

 

Removing the plastic storage bin behind the driver side back seat is simple. You can get a box from supercrewsounds.com or *********.com that with fit there perfectly. And you get to keep the passenger side storage bin. I have the supercrewsounds box with 1 10" sub. Works like a charm. These boxes shipped are around $120-150. Get a decent sub and you are in business for far less than the JL you were looking at.

 

Another note, I have the Polk MM1040 and its mounting depth is 4.5" and my box is over 5" but the design of the basket on the sub caused me to have to do some modifying of the box to get it to fit. In short, be sure of the dimensions of your sub and box and that they are compatible with each other.

 

I pulled the trigger and ordered the JL custom enclosure with the subs. I ordered from Crutchfield and the have a pretty liberal return policy so if I don't like it I can return it and figure out a plan B. Thanks for all the advice and suggestions.

 

You will have to do a lot of cutting, but you picked probably the single best option as far as aesthetics go. The sound should be great as well. Do you know what amp you intend to run yet?
