DIY Washable Cabin Air Filter

    great write up, and I made the same mistake, i put it together and went out and tried to put it in and it wouldnt fit, a few curse words later, and a lil more reading i got it

    I added an additional layer of the soft filter media to mine. It does not seem to be straining the motor, or reducing the air flow excessively. The central rivet comes apart in opposite directions, and easily handles the extra layer.

    Let the savings begin!!!

    Hey I did this mod today and it went together very well. I had to trim it down twice to fit before final assembly but very slick set up. Thanks again for the info on doing this. I showed my cousin the filter and he will do his Taco also.

    Has you guys tried it with the 3m charcoal filters? I did it with mine with the 1700, also where do you find the end pieces does it come with the filter?

    Mine was pretty bad. Not sure how long these leaves have been in there.


    Another tip guys, take compressed air (or in my case, a shop vac with the hose on the exhaust) and blow out the housing where the filter sits. It gets just as filthy as the filter does.

    Again thanks for saving us all on you your cost saving suggestion. keep up the good work.

    Hopefully I am right that their are no specific year differences that individuals will encounter on 2nd generations Tacomas. If individuals will post the year of ther vehicles that would really help people like me.

    Mine is a 2011 tacoma access cab trd off road.

    DEFINITELY going to try this mod out (if I can find the part, links didn't seem to work for me :( ). Don't like the idea of spending $11 for a cabin filter, esp when there's a reusable air filter and not a cabin filter (ask one of my older brother about it and he said no then shrugged it off - they just don't make em). Plus imo, would go great with the aFe filter I have now (why not have both that you can reuse lol).

    I just double-checked the links and they are working (from a computer and my Ipod). And they do still carry them, these filters have been around for at least 15 years because I started using one in my home in the mid 90's.

    Too much to list, but enough to get me in trouble. Repeatedly.
    New Taco owner here (one week!). Stumbled upon this when searching the Cheap & Easy Mods. <--Is why I'm dragging this back out for some flogging.

    The particular filter under discussion here is known to be about the worst-performing home HVAC filter on the market.

    While I'm not one to go praising any company's advice, Consumer Reports has a pretty good track record of testing stuff quite well. This filter came in as a rare Do Not Use: Performance Problem.

    And my own experience backs it up. Even before CR came out with their test of it, I had already concluded it's not worth the plastic it's wrapped in. I had one installed in my home HVAC. After only a month, I started noticing dust accumulation around my HVAC registers. Checked the filter, seemed okay, washed it anyway. Added a high quality 3M paper filter on the clean side of it just to test how it was doing. Checked it a month later and the 3M filter was showing dust accumulation already. This is with the washable filter in line before it!!

    Needless to say, I yanked it out of there and it hasn't returned since. And I have yet to see any more dust around my HVAC registers.

    So, yeah, washable, reusable filters are nice. And they're cheap in the long run. But what good is a filter if it doesn't, well, filter??
