For all of those who want to pull a Thoreau in their truck

I was sent this article today and for me the thought of living out of my truck bed has been an idea floating in the back of my mind. You can find the article here. The article is from 2007 but still interesting. His blog is gotruckyourself.blogspot.com
I am about to invest in a Camper shell and the guy who is giving me advice on it sent me this. Hopefully this will inspire so of you who like the idea of being like Thoreau and living out of a small place.

 

Ive read of a few people doing that. Pretty crazy but definitely smart! I say if you can find a way to live out of a vehicle and save money... go for it!

 

I lived in a tent all summer, could easily live in back of my truck.

 

yeah if you had access to all your amenities, it wouldn't be too hard to do. Just have to be in the right mind set. Anything is possible if you work hard enough

 

how would showers and bathroom trips work??

 

bathroom=public bathrooms
guests=chances are you won't get much if so tarp and a few foldable chairs
food= cooler/fridge like the one on arb website
address= P.O. box for mail, or use parents address.
homeless= no homeless your truck is your home
entertainment= laptop and dvds, go to your friends place, movies, etc

 

I may possibly go for it for a week because a friend and I may be going down to Florida during our spring break to watch some of the spring training games.

 

if i have to sleep in my truck for the night or so i always make sure to post up near a hotel with a continental breakfast. just walk in like you stay there and enjoy! comes in clutch trust me oh and they usually have a bathroom somewhere in the lobbies

 

I guessing that guy is fairly short and has a long bed. That wouldn't work for me since I'm 6'2" and have a short bed.

I also guess you can get buy wearing the same jeans, and/or shorts for a week, and a hoodie to disguise the fact that only own 3 t-shirts, one of which you use to sleep in.

It shouldn't be too hard... spring time the weather should still be fairly cool at night.. I tried tent camping in the dead of summer in FL and I about died... I ended up getting in the car and turning the ac on because it was so f'ing hot and humid. lol

might be able to do it if you lay diagonally. Definitely in the 6' bed. might be a tight fit in the sb.

 

I was reading an article on tent cities(actual tent cities not occupy wall street)
and its really a community with people taking pride in their tents, planting flowers etc. so in short it really is their home.

 

I can't remember what city it was in, but the government wanted to take it down. These people didn't have real jobs but they worked for the greater good of their community. Everyone had a role to play. They even had their own version of zoning laws. Alcohol abusers and drug users in a certain area due to the ease of getting an ambulance to that spot without disrupting the rest of the community. Families had another section etc. They had an appointed leader and so on.

 

one of those tent cities would be pretty cool... depending on who your with... if it were a bunch of people that are like yourself and you don't feel like you have to protect your shit, I wouldn't mind doing that for a little bit.

 

For the flordia thing it would not be as crazy as the guy in the article. I was thinking of staying at campgrounds and such for the Spring Training trip. That way we would have a specific legal cheap space with toilets and Showers and it is Florida in Spring so not too humid. How the guy got by was he of course lived in his truck. He would study in the student centre. He joined a rock climbing gym so he could use their shower facilities. And when you are living like that. You go out and have entertainment. He would probably meet his friends at restaurants or coffee houses or bars. You also have to remember that he was at Cal State Fullerton which is south of Los Angeles. You have to remember that the avg. in the Cold Months is about 48 so there is hardly any chance of waking up to the roads iced over.

 

I am also looking to get a camper shell for my Tacoma. Any recommendations on which is best or worst?

Ive heard good things about the snugtop (i believe that is what its called). Look up Pandajerk. He has one. Its pretty nice. I had an old leer for my pickup. It was decent. It did the job but damn that thing was heavy

That is a Good Thread to get pictures and opinions. Try a search. There are plenty of threads that talk about it. I am personally looking at the ARE MX. I have my reasons I can give them if you want.

lol I slept in a tent near Ocala at one of the springs this past July. That sucked BIG TIME. I hate being hot and just sitting there, you would have sweat dripping off you. I was supposed to do that for 3 more days and said F that and got a business man suite at the Holiday Inn.
