From my experience, my failures had nothing to do with thickness! I never cracked a ring gear, I just busted off teeth!

ok guys this question is answered... the locker if not used a lot will take a little working out to get easier, but in order for it to work EVERY time if you push the buttonand it doesn engage just turn the wheel a little then idle forward and bring it back straight. the locker will then engage ordisengage EVERY TIME! good luck... but this solves it.

The 2012 ATRAC is much better than the locker on previous models.

I'm willing to bet things inside the diff deflect easier under stress because of the thinner gear. Either that, or the e-locker diffs using adjustment collars to set backlash rather than shims. Those are the only real differences between the e-locked and non-locked diff...gear thickness and "shimming".

Ah no. The real difference is the cast iron double truss that keeps the housing from deflecting.

Did you had the locker engaged. If so were you turning?

I'm sure an aftermarket locker will have 'no problem' (aside from chirping the tires from binding) doing this, but I'm curious how yours broke while "backing out" of your driveway.

When it fails doesn't mean it happened all at once! Cracks and chips propegate into bigger chips and cracks until - failure. I've had 3 - 1 on the trail - one while making a u-turn, one whille pulling out of a friend's driveway.

the locker was was not engaged and in total, this is my 3rd broken ring and pinion set. it has also happened to Sara from All Pro years ago while she was backing up out of her own drive way. what i figure is the teeth had micro stress fractures before the actual failure, and backing up was the final straw that induced the break. going in reverse is all pressure on the "coast side" of the gear angle or cut of the gears, which is the weaker side of the ring and pinion gear set. that's why it's never a good idea to pull some buddy out of a stuck situation with a recovery strap while pulling in reverse.

    Ohhhh. Makes sense. Thanks.

Would you say the same about the stuck situation while pulling in reverse with a non-factory Toyota locker?

Wasn't aware there was a difference in trussing. Gonna have to lookit that next time I'm inside one of those diffs.
