The Jeep Wrangler may not be great on gas, but it holds its value better than any other small SUV and that counts for a lot.

The biggest cost associated with owning a car isn't fuel or repairs, it's depreciation. That's the difference between the car's cost and what it's worth when you sell it later on.

According to Kelley Blue Book, the Jeep Wrangler, along with the other vehicles included in this gallery will be worth the most, compared to their original sticker price, if you sell them after five years.

These percentages do not take into account any discounts or rebates -- or, in the case of the electric car, a $7,500 federal tax credit -- that would lower the original purchase price. That means the actual percentages could be even larger.

I thought the Tacoma would be higher then that. But still good tho

 

Damn I should of bought a Heep, they hold their value the best.

 

21 city 25 highway for the taco? Was it rolling downhill in neutral when they grabbed those #s? I didnt buy mine for fuel economy but mine gets nothing close to that.

I average 21 in my Tacoma in mixed driving (sit in good amount of traffic every day). I get about 24 highway.

It is higher, if you look at the percentage values it's at 49% just below the FJ.

 

That is probably a 4 cylinder yes, I average 22 mixed highway and city with mine.

 

Simply put....Tacoma's are THE best looking, most dependable mid-size trucks made....PERIOD!

 

quick example of how well they hold there value ---- i just bought a 2011 about 8 months ago and it was just considered a total loss. Long story short the insurance company valued the Tacoma about $1k more then i actually paid for it inclusing tt&l . So i actually came out on top and ended up getting a new 2012.

I now i got a good deal on the truck when i bought it but this still shows the the Tacomas hold a great value considering my truck allready had 13k miles on it at time of loss .

 

I feel like the jeep one is a little off. When I was looking at used cars/trucks the Jeeps we're a couple years old and dropped dramatically while Tacoma/FJ/4runner's had only dropped a few thousand from new.

 

have you ever tried to buy a used wrangler? i sold my 2004 with a basic lift and tires for 19k last year at 64k miles hell i bought the thing new for 27k i was happy got over retail book selling private party because there is so much demand for a wrangler in colorado.

 

i am very surprised the 4runner isn't on that list anywhere, we have always done very well selling our old 4runners.

Maybe I should have bought the Jeep when I was at the dealer (bought mine used from a Jeep Dealer), they had a bunch of 2010 4 door X unlimiteds, etc. for the same price bracket as my Tacoma, oh wait, Jeeps are pieces of crap (look up recalls and reliability stats, plus love love love my Tacoma. Im gonna agree that Tacomas at least in this region hold their value and then some, would like to konw how they figured their stats. Niece article though!

 

Paid around 20K for a new 08 PreRunner

3 Years later, 57~K miles it's worth 23-24K on KBB.

 

i have to strongly disagree with this statement. i've owned 4 jeeps, the latest was an '05 rubicon unlimited with 55K on the odo. very well made vehicle, not to mention the most capable off road ready vehicle out of the box money can buy. never did any repairs to it, just oil changes and brakes were the only maintenance items. paid $30K for it new and sold it for 50% of that value after 6.5 years. you can't ask better than that really. the one thing about jeeps - everyone and their brother wants one. it is a way of life that their marketing department has created. that's why they hold their value.

that being said, i sold my jeep to buy my tacoma, and i have no regrets. just at a different place in life now and the taco suits my needs better.

 

Yes, Rubicons with low miles that are a 5 or less years old going for under 20. Some only 3 years old for 19k after 35+ new. 3 years and 16k. It just a chrysler thing

I honestly don't agree with them about a Tacoma. As of now 05-06 trucks are still selling for 20K in good condition and thats more than 49% retained value. IMO there isn't another truck (full or mid) that will hold their value as good as the Tacoma does.
