Tom is absolutely correct - Ring and pinions are designed to go one direction. They are not like straight cut gears.

Illustrates the truss and non truss - also illustrates the WRONG way to route the ARB line!!!

Also demonstrates the SIGNIFICANT difference in ring gear thickness :D

I think all these items could be factors.

Um no. :) actually they may be :) but I think what you are seeing is that chamfer. We should post up our failed ring gears and show everyone the failures. Many guys have toasted pinions. Maybe we should start an elocker rescue where we match good ring gears with good pinions and have them re-lapped! :)

No chamfer. Look at the size of the teeth on the "8.4", how much ring width is below them before reaching the carrier plate, compare to the TRD. Yes, the chamfer is much more pronounced on the TRD rear end, but the "8.Fo" still has more ring gear there overall.

Edit: Also, that aggressive chamfer definitely can't be helping the heel of the teeth withstand stress.

That said, I'm with you on the trussing. That's most likely the main cause in most instances.

The size of the teeth is related to the gear ratio. :)

Size and number. I'm assuming then your images are an auto rear end v. manual? Or is the 8.4 re-geared?
I apologize for not counting ring and pinion teeth in a static internet image.

Regardless, we're getting sidetracked. Plop a 3.73 ring from a stock 8.4 next to a 3.73 from a stock e-locked ass end. The difference, while not enormous (1/4" or so), is obvious.

maybe you did maybe you didn't..

ever think that maybe you had ATRAC engaged at the time without even noticing it was on? maybe that's why you had such a hard time getting up the first real ledge while everyone else it no real problems. who knows

I'm thinking so. I should review the vid. But once again, I had no friggin' idea of what it was, how to use it and how to turn it off!

Truss is important but wouldn't that be a problem in older TRD's or in once with higher gear ratios? Most of the factory gear failures I had seen had gear split up. If somebody is shearing teeth then I would think its more likely that gear was setup incorrectly or bearings let go due to not enough lubrication.

it has happened with stock gears from the factory as well on 05+ tacos. so it's not exclusive to those who have re-geared with aftermarket gear sets

You mean sheering instead of split? Its possible.
I was just saying that I had seen much more splitted gears on stock factory gears then anywhere else. First thing that came to my mind was that somebody used too long bolts holding ring. Lots of splits happen in places where the bolts are, maybe that gives additional stress.

A-TRAC was added to Tacomas in 2009... in other Toyotas and Lexus machines a bit before that... In all cases, long after God created the earth.
