In some countries they actually eat horse. I believe the Belgium is one of those countries. Some people keep pigs as pets but I'm not going to stop eating bacon.

From an FFA standpoint why is it wrong? We slaughter cows and pigs... I dont see how it's different. The article says horses can love as much as humans or whatever, can cows and pigs not?

You should also add "for human consumption" to the title.

And factually, it was because Congress defunded the Governments ability to inspect plants that slaughtered horses for human consumption. Without inspection the meat could not be sold.

as a former FFA president i kind of agree with him. i mean sure, it's not cool to slaughter horses, but we don't eat them so that's what really seems wrong about it. . . how were horses previously killed? what are the political/financial pros and cons to it now?

I don't see the problem? Because some people keep them as pets?

To add... I do hope that just because horse is now legally on the menu that it doesnt end up mixed in the meat at the taco bell ( not that i know whats in it anyway). I also hope this doesnt lead to slaughtering cats and dogs to eat. I dont think it will ever go that far but people are crazy...

from my standpoint i see it as jjgwheeler sees it.. its just not not normal here in the US to see horses being slaughtered. when i think of that, i jsut get a sickening feeling in my stomach. yes, ive raised hogs for the past 6 years for slaughter. But if you think about it, the slaughter animals (swince, steers, lambs) 4-h and FFA raise are the most well taken care of carcass id say almost in the nation.. those slaughter houses treat those animals like shit, literally like shit. i just dont see it being normal for humans to be eating horse. its just something that isnt normal to me or many other people id say. not trying to start an argument, just coming from my standpoint, it doesn seem normal to me.

yeah but the only reason 4-H and FFA do that animal showing is for the showmanship of it. you know who awards all that money for their winnings, the slaughter houses and grocery stores that buy them after its over. and they get chopped up and processed just like the ugly ones on the side of the road with flies all over them. whether or not an animal got combed everyday doesn't make it not tasty. which is harsh yes, but that's the world we live in.

I am normally okay with killing animals for food. Trophy hunting I don't agree with. I do admit that my first thought was "what's next, dogs?" Some countries do eat dogs. I guess I'm not okay with that, at least not in this country where we can raise livestock for food and most people are not desperate enough to eat a stray dog. How far off are horses? Some people have deep emotional connections with them.

I'm going to say this upsets me. I feel like if we start eating horses and people get used to it, then comes other more common pets. It's like we become less caring and emotional. That could carry over into how we all treat each other as human beings. I once had an old man tell me that "people used to care about other people".

we as humans slaughter animals on the daily. cows, pigs, chickens, all farm raised animals basicly. i dont see this as any different. i had pet chickens at one time in my backyard when i was little and i loved them. they were awesome. but i didnt walk around telling people not to slaughter or eat chicken either.

im not trying to start an argument, just throwing in my opinions

Its kind of a catch 22 situation from my understanding. When horse slaughter was illegal in the US the horses were transported (sometimes over numerous days and 1000's of miles crowded onto transports without food or water) in very bad conditions to slaughter houses in Mexico. The US government believes (Note: I say THEY do not that I agree) that they can control the treatment of horses pre slaughter and make it a better situation. I am not sure this is true but I will say I understand the argument. If you want to argue that no horse should ever be slaughter I would jump on that bandwagon first. However, with the recession I see people trying to give away horses every day because they can no longer care for them. Most people don't understad the cost of caring for a horse let a lone a herd of them. I have two horses and it costs me on average $8000-$10000 yearly to board, care for and feed them. People consider pets, dogs, cats horses etc. as disposibile. Dogs and cats are slaughtered in a much greater number than horses in the US. People get tired off the responsibility or believe the animal is acting out when they neglect it or don't train it and then take it to an animal "shelter". Shelter my ass. I could go on but I will quit ranting, you get the idea.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I never knew horse slaughter was not legal in the US before, shows you how much I pay attention. I really do not know what to say on the matter, dont spend enough time around horses to really share an opinion. What really disgusts me is what people in China do to dogs and cats...I could tell but I am sure most of you would like to keep your previous meal inside of your stomach.

    Well said.

I think its wrong to eat them here but thats only because we havent eaten them here. They are put on a pedistal and treated as pets and friends but if we didnt have that relationship it wouldnt matter. It all depends on the culture I suppose.

Arent there some crazies who worship cows? They dont slaughter them do they? Who here doesnt love a good beef steak or burger?
