Indeed, and Mexico and Canada are getting a lot of US horses.

I actually worked as an Engineer for 14 years for IBP, largest meat packer in the US, techically part of Tyson now. I worked in Garden City, KS were the cattle kill ran 390 head an hour, but that's nothing like 1200 pigs per hour the Waterloo, IA plant ran.

In the mid 1990s we purchased 4 cow/bull kill floors with 2 of them also functioning as horse kills. Tama Iowa and Palestine texas, can't remember if the Sealy TX plant also killed horse. When IBP purchased them they moved quickly to end the horse kill function since they thought it would be a bad idea to get out we were killing horse.

The market was France, Belgium and Canada.

I don't think it is proposed that horse meat be allowed for human consumption in the US, just a return to processing for human consumption and export to countries that allow it.

I crossed paths with a female buffalo rancher from Alberta that said her buffaloes were processed in a kill that also processed horse.

We bought a plant in Brooks, Alberta as well but don't think it process horse.

I'm all for horse slaughter for human consumption, horse are getting processed for meat for zoo animals. Mink is also fed horse, viscious meat eaters they are. Human consumption is more profitable.

Take the meager profit away from disposing your horse to a horse kill and more horses are being mistreated until they die and have to be hauled off for rendering.

We have the luxury of having better choice of meat to eat instead of cats and dogs like most of the rest of the world.

Exactly my point. It's not like horses are not getting slaughtered already in this country, it's just that human consumption is not allowed, which is crazy, when you can feed horse meat to a mink! (which, by the way, is being raised to be slaughtered for its fur...) So it's "cruel and abnormal" to kill a horse to serve it in a restaurant or sell it in a butcher shop, but it's ok to use it as animal feed?...

I APPROVE of this statement. The mass killing of animals in shelters makes me sick..makes me wonder why the fuck we have businesses and people breeding animals when there are obviously more pets than homes. Pure breds my ass.

I care? I don't think animals deserve to be abused or forced to live shitty lives just because they face slaughter. Sometimes I wish reincarnation was a sure thing, we definitely have it coming for all the shit we've done to animals.

Pretty sad when you figure you can buy a cooked chicken at Publix for $5...minus man hours, that chicken's life was worth what, $2?? I eat meat, but damn I hate that I have to buy food from the markets.

meh, you wont catch me eating horse, they are a working animal, cows are dumb, there can be a wide open gate and they will try to go through the fence right beside it, we had a cow tear up our fence doing that. pigs arent a working animal either.

now granted this was all from the old days but a horse would help provide for you, it would heard said cows, and plow your fields and transport you from place to place...cows and pigs cant do that. some cows might be able to be trained to do so, but they are still dumb, and not good for riding.

invalid argument sir. a pig is not going to heard cow, its not going to get you from place to place in a timely manner, its not going to save your life (horses used back in the day during the war were trained to save their rider, by getting them out of bad situations, jumping over and kicking the bad guys) they could be trained to plow but will not be proficient at it.
