Insurance-Progressive Snapshot??

So I've decided that I wasn't too pleased with state farm and gave progressive a call. They gave me a lower rate with the same coverage but also offered something interesting. If I do their SNAPSHOT program I'll likely get another 25% off insurance. The program requires that I plug some device into my diagnostic port and drive with it for six months. Problem is I have a scangauge hooked up and love it. However for 25% cost savings I figure it may be wise. Has anyone done this, or have experience with it?? Anyway to get a spliter that will allow me to plug both devices in?

Yea that was also what I was thinking, but I don't really have anything to hide. Anyone know if I could get a splitter on the ODB port???

 

It's a tracking system isn't it? They can tell how you drive, slam on the brakes, do quick maneuvers, speed, swerve while driving slow after that onnnne drink....if you are less than perfect they will jack up your rates!!

 

My friend did it. It lowered his rate a little bit. All it does is track when you drive, how far, and if you accelerate/ brake hard. They wont jack your rates up he said... can only make them less expensive

Sounds too good to be true..I'd do a little more research before doing anything.

I just had to cancel and re-apply my progressive insurance because I moved to a different state. My new rate is lower and they offered me the snapshot discount. I just installed it yesterday morning. I can already view my driving stats on their website.

There is also a chart that shows number of trips, drive time, number of hard brakes.

I decided to test the device out a little. I took some hard corners with some G's in them and also some fast acceleration to pass vehicles. Those statistics don't seem to stand out in the info that the device transmitted.

A little background on my daily commute: 25 miles each way, single lane, windy rural highway in VT. Lots of corners, potential hard brakes, and varying speeds.

Insurance company can monitor me via my driving record. It isn't gonna be any cheaper than just having a clean record and current def driving certificate. Fuck that driving test co-pilot shit.

 

No way would I do that. Eventually that info will be used to screw us over even better.

 

There is no way I would put that on my truck.

 

Check under your hood by the intake manifold my '01 has an OBD-II port under there you could just plug it in there and leave it. No personal experience with the snapshot.

 

STAY AWAY FROM IT.

We will not like the day when this becomes law and it's on the way. Don't fall for the bullshit, it will screw you in the end. It just provides data they can use to "justify" raising your rates at some later time...RUN AWAY don't walk.

 

I did the Snapshot discount thing.... Didn't turn out too well for me, cuz I wasn't exactly given the correct information about how it works... Here's what I found out, the Hard Way:

1. It's designed to give you a break on insurance for secondary cars. I used it on my primary car, and my mileage killed me, and I don't think that I drove that much (at the time... my commute's increased two-three fold now)

2. I was told don't drive at night, between midnight and 5 am... Turns out those are the hours that I should have been driving to get a discount.

3. Tracks speed and hard brakes. Anything over 60 mph isn't good for you, and if you exceed a braking deceleration of more than 7mph per second, you get "dinged points"

It doesn't track where you go or anything, just when and how fast. If you use your truck for your primary driving, you'll end up with like a 1-5% discount.

Doesn't work like that Chris... One of the questions I asked before starting it was "What about if I loan my truck to a friend; can I take it out so I'm not dinged by any potential habits they might have?" Their response was "you can so long as it's not a common occurance." It was then explained to me that the device also tracks your odometer as well, and if your driving habits don't matchup somewhat with the odometer, they will disqualify you.


On the flipside, I can't wait to dump progressive and move back to state farm. I talk to my family's agent with SF, and I'd be paying some $85 a month for BETTER coverage with them (if it weren't for some underwriting issue), vs.... well, I won't say how much I'm paying now, but I could pay off my truck almost two years sooner with the difference.

 

I'd never change to Progressive just because of that women their commercials!!

 

So what exactly are you supposed to do when you get on the highway where the speed limit is 65-70?

 

I wouldn't be cause (I believe) the dude pulling the stings in that compny is one of those that thinks those of us who work are not doing our share when in comes to paying taxes.
