DTM defection

Hello TW!

I am new to your forum, and I will be new to Taco's when I purchase mine this Xmas break.

I'm not new to forums in general. I've spent (still spend) 8 years on VWVortex and have driven a German car since Senior year high school. Which adds up to 2 VW's and an Audi S4 over 15 years.

I started med school last year and sold my S4. I did feel sad, but now that I am going to be needing a vehicle again w/ my clinical/hospital rotations, I've made a wise decision to get a Japanese car. And not just a car, a truck. A 1st Gen Tacoma. I'm hoping the one's I've spotted in my hometown will be available when I get home for break in 2 weeks. I'm looking at 5spd, 3.4L, 4x4, TRD, SR5 Tacomas. $10k range.

This was not a decision I've gotten to easily. I don't even really feel like I've made the decision until I've plunked down my $ and have the title, keys, and the Taco driving away.

But I need the reliability! And my mom's old '91 Camry is still kickin' even tho we gave it to my cousin a long time ago. And as far as I know, it's only needed tires a battery and normal maintenance.

This is a HUGE contrast to any of my German chunks of metal! I eventually taught myself/learned how to wrench cars because I was going broke paying indy's and friends to fix my cars! But this time around, I won't have any time to lose wrenching my car. Or the $$. I'm living off Uncle Sam's loans! I can handle batteries, tires, oil changes and routine maintenance. But I can't NOT show up to a hospital rotation cuz my Audi or BMW broke down!

So I'll start over. I'll re-n00bify myself. And just get a fun reliable Toyota pickup!

I'll post pix once I get my Taco! I'll be as active as I can be on the forums. As my time and knowledge permit me! If I see any questions about German cars...I'm all over those. Or PM me if you do.

05 Passat's are tough to fix. That's a model I do know how to wrench tho!! lol

I check almost every day, on the ones that I've spotted by scouring the ads. The autotrader, ebay, CL circuit.

I think the fact that I will ONLY drive stick is keeping those on the lots. I didn't even drive a slushbox w/ my learner's permit. My sister's 5spd Jetta and my now bro-in-law's Chevy S10 were my learning wheels.

I'm pretty excited. I almost bought a pickup when it was car shopping time/graduation present. But I bought a GTI and that was all she wrote.

My friend in college, actually drove the exact same Taco specs I'm looking for. I don't think it's too ironic. I luved his truck!

If anything I'll probably lift it! If I wanted to lower a truck, there's actually a few decent Xrunners up for sale.

The fact that my end game has me practicing in PNW or CO, as well as the fact that this is probably the last vehicle I can afford for awhile, makes me pick 4x4.

The 2 Tacomas I am interested in are 2000's. And they say manual locking hubs? Here's my 1st absolute n00b question. What does that mean? Is that like some of the other's I know where I have to like back up to lock 'em??

Grrr, I hate asking a Q like that, which is obvious to the rest of you.

 

1st, welcome to TW!!

2nd, with manual locking hubs, you physically get out of the truck and lock the front hub assemblies into place via knob in center of wheel.

Ok, well at least almost 2 decades of driving in Midwestern snow gives me the knowledge foundation of when I need to lock 'em and go 4x4, and when I can just leave it, and use some driving skills.

Welcome! my oldest brother has a ’04(i think maybe it’s ’03) A4. other brother got read of his jetta this summer.
