Can't get gas in my truck! LOL

Hey folks, brand new newbie here ... here's my issue.

When I try to fuel up, the gas comes foaming up into (and out of) the neck after a couple seconds. The pump won't go slow enough to prevent it, and it happens at all pumps. I can only pump about 50 cents worth, then wait a few seconds, pump 50 cents more, and so on.

It's like a clogged breather tube or something, only worse.

When you look into your filler neck, aren't you supposed to see a little metal trapdoor in there? 'Cause I don't see one, and if it used to be there (don't remember) it may have come loose and fell down into the neck somewhere to clog the flow of fuel to the tank.

Any thoughts??

I think you are right about the trapdoor thingy. It is supposed to be there, and its possible it fell off and is sitting down there stopping up the hole.

See if you can take one of those long magnet tools and pull it out.

 

Squeeze halfway?

 

Some newer vehicles dont have the trapdoor thingy. Dont know if yours is one.

 

have you tried holding up the nozzle and pumping?

 

His is an 04. Doesn't seem too new. I thought the newer ones have to have it?

 

I've tried everything. You can pull the nozzle clear out til you're watching the gas flow.

No gas pump will pump slow enough to not overflow the neck. The only way I can fuel up at all is to do the start-and-stop thing.

 

ill take a look at my truck to see how thick and if there is any places for hoses to get kinked and reply back tonight

 

You said that it happens at all pumps. Do you mean at THAT particular station or at other stations too?

The reason I ask is because that happened with my son's car and my first thought is that someone shoved something in there. But he said the nozzle looked more curved than usual.

So what we did was take it to another station and noted that the nozzle was more straight. The gas went in just fine.

 

do you have a body lift? the fuel filler extension tubing always gave me trouble on my 99 taco with a 2" BL

 

did you try sorta 'lobbing' the fuel in from like 10ft away from the trucK?

yah you'll spill a little but it won't pressurize the tank and make it burp that way.

 

my boat is acting the same way right now and never has before. completely different but at least be thankful you're only filling a 20 gallon tank 50 cents at a time and not a 70 gallon one.

LOL - I've tried lobbing it from about an inch, hadn't thought to back off a few steps though.

 

When you filled up previously did you pump more gas after the pump cut off? I don't know if 1st gens have a charcoal canister but I have seen this problem before.

 

You mean like pumping a little more gas to bring it up to an even dollar amount?

If so yes, I've always done that.

I know my 2.7 has a charcoal/evap canister. There is a pipe/tube that runs off the main fill neck, about 3'' below the filler cap, and it has a hose that runs to the evap/charcoal canister under the hood. Mine is on the drivers side, fender side, inside the engine bay. Its a black box that is about 10X4X6 and has two circular cap things on top.

Any overfill or expanding gas fumes are routed there.

 

So it's like a reservoir type thing?

 

not really, but sorta...

The charcoal absorbs any fumes and moisture. So there is no fluid in it. The evap canister also has a valve to let any gas fumes out. Mine buzzes when it is warm (80degs+) because the fuel vapor in the tank expands and it lets off the pressure.
