Who has the "Pop N Lock" installed and how do you like it?

I am considering a Pop N Lock Tailgate lock for my 07 TRD Sport, but wondering how good it is made and get some feedback from those who have purchased it. Some of the comments on ToyotaNation site seemed to trash the quality and ease of operations.

What do you guys all think? I think they go for about $45.

 

I like it.....it's a very cheap & easy modification. Ya can't go wrong with cheap & easy modifications.

It's made of plastic - so anyone knows, it's only a theft deterant (not theft prevention).

I honestly don't know if there's anything else out there that's 'better'. A full steal lock would be ideal - but I haven't seen nor heard anyone on the other forums talk about one.

 

I took advantage of the power door mechanism on my TRD Sport, and installed a "Pop & Lock" power lock, part# PL8520 - connected to the passenger side door (so it takes 2 buttton presses on the keyless-entry keypad to unlock the tailgate).

Google it, and you'll see that this "power" kit is well put together, and works great.

i've seen the pop n locks for about $35 online and i got mine locally for $40

when i got my truck i came here and looked and someone was posting about missing tailgates so that was the first :mod: i did

Good thinking !! I think I will go ahead and put the hose clamp (industrial strength types) on the pivot, as well as put away those adjustable tie downs inside.

As for the Pop & Lock, do you all think it's worth the $35 ~$40?

 

Me too. 2nd mod I did (first was to paint my chrome Toyota grille emblem white to match the truck). Yeah, it is a good idea but like others say, if they want it they could break and steal the gate anyways. I am still going to do the hose clamp mod too.

 

I will be installing one tonight. $39 locally purchased. It really is just a deterrent. They aren't hard to break into. I just don't want anyone to think they can break in on a whim.

Installed it on my 08 with quite a bit of force to get the bolts through the tailgate holes.

First thing to do is remove that pop-n-lock sticker. Next, I would carefully paint the key lock black. That silver sure sticks out on my black taco.

For the plastic storage covers in the box, I just put a screw into the knobs so they can't be turned to open position. Again, just a deterrent. I've read in another thread where guys put in little locks as well. All I need is something stored inside that's actually worth taking.

I have one. Good deterrent from stealing your tailgate, which is why I bought it. Got it for $35/shipped on Ebay.

 

The Pop/N/Lock is easy to install and works as an excellent deterrent as it actually looks like a very strong lock. I wouldn't be without it.

From years in law enforcement, I can tell you that auto burglars are very nervous outside of their own neighborhoods and won't spend any time attempting to break what they believe may be a substantial lock.

Exceptions are long-term parking at airports, huge apartment complex lots and downtown ramps where the thieves are often connected with the lot attendents and drive trucks that appear to be from auto repair/body shops. Those guys take their time with little or no regard for being observed, counting on the average passer-by to believe they are doing legitimate repair work. In places like this, try to park with your rear bumper backed up to another vehicle, fence or immovable object, even if you do have the PopNLock. This may also save your spare tire & wheel.

Like many of us, I carry $500 deductible theft insurance and will go out of my way to avoid the five C-Note hit in the wallet, to say nothing of possible insurance cancellation if it happens twice.

Had one, took it off. Waste of money.

1. On one winter and lock seized from road salt or corrosion. Either way I couldn't get the key in so now it's worthless.
2. Supposedly only 6 different keys for it, so someone could just grab one of each and walk away with your tail gate or whatever's in there with no trouble.
3. Felt like you were going to break the handle yanking up on it. The bar extenders it comes with make you yank the handle up hard and fast to pop the releases. Skipping the extenders means someone can open the tail gate even with it locked due to the small amount of movement still allowed.

 

Does anybody have a picture of an installed pop-n-lock? I've got a dealer installed tailgate lock, but it has no identifying label. I'm curious whether it's a pop-n-lock or something else.

Best I can tell from the distance and contrast in that picture, mine is a pop-n-lock. The location and size of the keyhole look the same.

 

If you're dead set on a "key" lock (rather than a "power" lock), have you considered the factory/orginal option? (I think it goes for about $59).

Is it truly a factory option? My truck came with one, but as you can see above, I thought it was a dealer option and I'm trying to figure out of it is the pop-n-lock. It appears so from Phantom's picture.

 

I thought about the POWER LOCK variety, but it looks like too much work, fishing wires, popping door panels (driver side) , and all that. So I just want the "WOULD BE THIEVES" to visually see that the my tailgate has a "LOCK" and that he would just mossy (mossie?) along to the next truck for his loot. SO it would be mainly for deterrent purposes. By the way, I just did the "hose clamp" thing to the gate pivot and I am somewhat relieved (relaxed, should I say.)

 

What is this "factory option" you speak of? I have never heard of such a thing. Only on the new Tundra's.
