OP, what oil filter did you use? Try changing it to an OEM one and see if that solves it.

    "95"-2.7- 227k : never ticked
    "09"-2.7- 12k : doesn't tick
when I hear valves "rattling" on my "66" chevy, they get adjusted immediately. solid lifters can be a pain. the nice thing though; you can't hear them with open headers.

Although a different engine, the 22re used to tick like Fred Astair on the dancefloor. Between the T-chain, injectors, and valves, there was a real show going on under there.

darn! you guys are making me think I need a hearing aid or something. also owned two 2.4L 4-rnrs. both had high milage, and the only time any noise was noticable was when the chain guides broke. never noticed any valve noise, or i'd have been adjusting.

seems like the noise is fairly common, but I haven't experienced it on any of the ones I've owned.

I would add BG MOA to the motor oil. It is probably the best additive out there. Usually, I don't recommend additives but this is the one exception. It often will take care of any motor ticking unless it is severe. http://www.bgprod.com/products/engineoil.html

Also are you sure it is not an exhaust leak? On 4cyls it is very common to develop a hairline crack in the exhaust manifold. It is very noticeable when driving and sounds like motor issues. Was it sprayed down to get rid of the oil on the motor from the filter? If so, the cool water could have cracked the manifold or made crack worse.

I would stick with 5w30 even it hot weather. Always stick with manufacturers recommendations. Many people say you don't need 5w30 if it is warm which is incorrect. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/motor-oil-101/

OP: Check your exhaust manifold; maybe it developed a crack. My 2.7 had a cracked manifold and I always thought it was valve tick before I seafoamed my truck and noticed the smoke coming out of the manifold.
