D Ring install on fender wells??

Hello, I haul two dirt bikes weekly an am having isssues with where my D Rings are located. Right now I have them in the front drain holes, but I need them wider and a little more spread out. I have a DC shortbed, So I was wondering if i could mount them to the top fender wells on the flat surface that backs up the the cab? If i use a backing plate will this be strong enough?

Check this out and see if it's more like what your thinking. Thought it was a good alternative to the d-rings

 

Not really what i need, nice idea thouigh. I like my D Rings an just want to mount them higher an wider so it'll support two bikes better. I just want to make sure i can mount them on the fender well?

 

Alright, well I'm sure if you put in a backing plate that would be fine. I would think that without the backing plate the d-ring would be too weak and over time would loosen and possible pull out of the holes due to stress over time.

 

Yes! Now I really like that idea, as long as they are strong enough for two full size bikes while driving on bumpy fire roads... Do they flex or pull on the bed sides when bikes are tied down??

 

OP, since pics are down i'll explain mine. Super easy, pulled front 2 bed bolts up slid the long end of pull style tie down (not rachet type) hook thru and rebolted bed bolt. when not being used i hook them to rear d rings and snug up so they dont bang around. I hook up street bike every weekend took 6 minutes

 

I had no problem loading two sport bikes in the back of mine with the standard D rings.

 

I'm confused, (don't take much) the tops of the wheel wells are no wider than the two bed bolts (where most add extra d-rings), maybe a couple inches at most. Again maybe I don't understand.

 

i few inches makes a big difference, it hard to explain in words. But when you have two bikes in the bed you have to spread the bikes apart far as possible to the bars dont rub. When you do this one of the D Rings is almost under the front tire of the dirt bike wanting to pull the tie down straight down, while the other tie down is pulling clear across the bed at an angle. So one tie down is super tight and the other is lose as a goose causing the bikes to be unstable on turns or bumpy roads. So I just wanted to mount some hooks or D Rings toward the outter most part of the bed. You ever seen the full size beds like on a Cheve, they have cut outs on the top rail of the bed and they work flawless for tying bikes down

 

I haul two motards in mine pretty regular. I've added extra d-rings under the bed bolts. Maybe the smaller 17inch rims help vs 21inch dirt rims. Have you tried hooking the bikes together in the middle, across the bars, then with one strap on the opposite sides, a total of three straps?

 

Some of the guys i ride with are super picky about getting there levers scratched up, anyways... I just placed an ordered the Hook-ups tie downs so see if those do any better with two bikes on the back roads

 

Oh an I have the Moto-gate as well
