Tranny problem

I have a 2005 Tacoma 4x4 auto with 105,000. The problem I have is if I make a abrupt stop the tranny doesn't shift back to to low gear right away. I stopped hard due to a car pulling out in front of me, I then stepped on the gas and bang the tranny was still in high gear and it slammed into low gear . Its done it numerous times, even sitting at a stop sign the other day I felt the truck shifting down while I was stopped. Basically if I stop hard it takes a bit for the tranny to catch up and shift back down to low gear . Any thoughts before I take it in to get checked out, the previous owner had the same problem with this truck but the mechanics couldn't find anything wrong I know this because I have the maint. records. Its had the tranny service done at around 60,000 miles

I don't trust the accuracy of past owners. I'd change it again myself to make sure it wasn't out of range.

 

Have you had the updated tranny flash? They came out with new transmission code about a year and a half ago. I think it is included when you get the brake/accelerator override flash done. Not sure if this applies to your truck or not. My 2009 used to feel like it was not in gear after hard braking and then accelerating. It would wind-up for a bit then bang into gear. There are lots of threads and a TSB about this. Check it out.

You could probably get it done free as I believe that the Brake/Throttle override is a recall. You should get the new Tranny code included. They might want to shave down your gas pedal though. Part of the recall is cutting the gas pedal about 3/4" shorter. Some dealers seem to be more flexible on this than others. Some might ask you to sign a waiver if you don't want the pedal chopped.

 

Before going to extreme heights, check your u-joints. I had a clunk, that kinda felt like the tranny...shifting down to catch up and creating a clunk...I searched the forum and tried the u-joints...clunk is gone. That could not be your case though...I'm at ~70k and replaced all three.

 

Thanks I had my pedal shaved a while back and there was no mention of ECM flash. Its not the u joints. Is there a place I can check online for recalls ? Toyota ?

Ok did that no recalls but I did find this from when I took it in for the pedal shave. Whats a reflash?

What kind of a reflash should I ask for I have a 2005 4x4. The guys at the from counter are shall I say not mechanically inclined...most just started shaving.

 

A reflash or flashing is a term for updating &/or reprogramming the onboard CPU/ECU. etc;

pretty sure its something you can't get at local parts store, its a dealership thing most likely

 

I'll take it in next week and talk to the dealership I'll post the results.

Could it just be axle wrap? Does it clunk when you let off the brakes or clunk regardless?

 

If you bring your VIN to the dealer, they should have a computer record of the work that has been done. They should have flashed the ECM when they shaved the pedal. They should have a work order of what work was performed at that time.

 

If you read my up on my posts I cut and paste my service record I found on the Toyota site. It says RFLSH but that still didnt fix the problem so I'll have to take it in and see what exactly the flash was for.

 

I am trying to find the tranny flash TSB for earlier model trucks. it states the number of the program that should be installed with the updated code. After searching I found the TSB for 2009 and 2010. If the dealer puts his reader on the truck he should be able to tell you what version is installed. Only takes a few minutes- but I don't know if they would do this for free. Some vehicles have a sticker under the hood that states the present ECM code. Unfortunately, Toyota techs do not seem to update this sticker as part of the flash procedure.

Would the flash thats for the 2010 be appliedcable to the 2005?

Just spoke with service guy at the dealer they hook up the scanner only to look for trouble codes they don't look for updates he had no idea where to look for a tranny flash if it's not the recall list he has no idea where to look he, had never heard of an. Ecm flash for the tranny

 

Yeah, they like to play stupid (sometimes not playing). I am not sure if the tranny flash is available as a separate item anymore- I think it is included with the brake/accelerator override that was supposed to be done as a package when they shaved the pedal. I was lucky enough to find a good dealer- I bring in the VIN number of the vehicle and they can call up on a computer every service that has been done on the vehicle since it left the lot.

If your service adviser has never heard of an ECM flash- it is time to find somebody qualified to work on modern vehicles.
