I agree with mountain mike, this is a great thread. I don't carry nearly enough in my truck. BUT the one thing I do always carry, and I don't think it's been mentioned yet, is a bag of Fritos. Excellent fire starter and edible too! When I first heard about it I tried it out with a small bag, just lit the bag and it burned for 10 minutes before I put it out.

Surprised none of you mentioned a fire piston for carry in your trucks. We have at least one in every vehicle we own and they have never let us down when we needed fire. Sadly, unlike corn chips, I don't believe that eating one would be very beneficial.

so i have been following this thread since it started and there is a lot of great stuff in here. i had no idea it would blow up the way it has but i am glad it did haha. since christmas is coming up i was looking at different knives to get myself but i can't decide on any. i have a 3" kershaw assisted opening knife that i have on me at all times but i would really like a good 6" knife cause sometimes the 3" just doesn't get the job done. what is a good 6" knife/brand that is below 60ish? i don't want a serrated blade either. also what is the best way to sharpen a knife?

this is what is use to sharpen my knives. an old timer introduced me to diamond sharpeners when i was in Scouts. My knives stay razor sharp.

    http://www.eze-lap.com/product/2x4ds.htm

What are you trying to do with the knife?
I just bought this Gerber for cleaning deer. I've cleaned 7 deer with it this season and have only sharpened it once but this type of blade is user specific.
    http://www.basspro.com/Gerberreg;-P...product/99680/45425?cmCat=CROSSSELL_THUMBNAIL
SOG makes great knives. I have had 2 of the Mini Xray folder and a seal
Buck makes great knives too but Ive found them harder to keep sharp

I have a few Glock knives. For the price they can't be beat and are just as sturdy as their ammo firing cousins. I have a serrated one in the BOB and a straight blade version in the truck. My everyday carry is a Benchmade.

Choose a blade made of CPM S-30V steel. It has high pry-bar strength, great initial sharpness, edge holding and high stain resistance. It costs double almost what normal steel does so keep that in mind. Another great steel is ZDP-189, but is mainly used for smaller blades. If you're purchasing a blade to do chopping, slashing, etc. in a wilderness or harsh environment setting, S30V will be the choice. ZDP 189 is extremely sharp and retains its sharpness and wear resistance but is a little more prone to chipping when put up against a S30V.

Summary, for a short carry blade for personal defense and daily cutting tasks that you don't want to sharpen every month...go with a ZDP 189 blade. For wilderness, chopping wood, roots, animal bone, etc. go with a S30V.

My Spyderco daily carry is a ZDP 189 Endura that I got on Ebay for $60. My field knife is a Green Beret Yarborough. It was free after I gave my soul to Special Forces. You can buy one through Chris Reeve's Knives, sold under the name Green Beret but they're about $300. Great knife though.
