V-6 (4-liter) oil filter question

    While from an ease-of-maintenance standpoint I really like the placement of the oil filter on my '12 V6, I wonder where all the crap goes when the engine is shut off.

    Won't all the crap in the filter just drain out and down, due to the inverted orientation of it? Is there a valve that prevents this, or will the filter itself keep the gunk trapped? :confused:

    4.10 gears, sliders, and lots of buttons.
    Most filters have anti drain back valves. Also, The oil flows from the pan, up to the filter, then around the engine. Any oil that were to drain back, would simply go back into the pan with the rest of the dirty oil.

    Ok, so I think you just enlightened my understanding of how an oil filter works. It doesn't really trap particulates and gunk, but by being upstream of the engine just keeps the inflow clean? Is this right?

    Edit: total noob question, I realize. But I always looked at oil filters like they were air filters, trapping particulates. Sounds like I was mistaken!

    No. Oil filters definitely trap particulates. Take a look at this thread for pics and videos of how they're constructed - should help your understanding of how they work, not to mention which ones to buy... :wink:

    The oil filters DO trap most all contaminants. However, as the oil goes thru the filter, and is "cleaned" of these particles, it then flows thru the engine, lubing, and picking up more, then goes down to the pan, to the pump, and back thru the filter.

    I found a small rubber cap when I took my oil filter off. Maybe a half inch in diameter. Is this supposed to go in one of the holes?
