i did a search on here for the ticking noise but it seems it was only for the v6. i have a 1996 2.7 liter with 146k miles. for some reason there is a loud ticking sound when the truck is at idle whenever i push the gas it goes away then comes right back when at idle also if the truck is rolling at anytime and the gas is not pushed it does this the truck is a stick shift so basiically whenever i am not accelerating the truck has this loud ticking sound almost sounds like a bearing or something does not sound like valves to me. any ideas on this. sounds like coming from the front bottom of the engine, possibly by the belts.

When is the last time you had the valves adjusted?

Based off your description I would say it is the valves. That's where I would start.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Adjusting the valves on the 2/3rz isn't an easy task. It requires replacing the shims.

    The intake clearance is .006 - .010". The exhaust clearance is .010 - .014"

If they are making that kind of racket than the valves need to be adjusted. Adjusting them per the scheduled maintenance is more of a preventative maintenance thing.

My sisters 98 always had the ticking from day 1. It is a normal sound for that engine
