    It's well known they are.

Not really any more fucked than any other system...just depends what breaks.

If you shear off your axle shaft or blow the joint open like you see in his pictures, unlocking a hub wouldn't do shit. You'd still have the axle flopping around in the front suspension, just waiting to break something else.

Regardless of 4wd system, that thing has to come out.

No it won't, With the hub unlocked the wheel will spin and the axle will never move.

Which will not stop it from flopping around in your suspension as I previously mentioned, possibly binding and damaging suspension components, steering, brake lines, etc.

I repeat: regardless of drive system type, that thing has to come out.

If the joint is internally damaged but the axle itself has not separated, you can unlock the hub and be ok. I have yet to see this happen without completely shredding the boot and the axle shaft disconnecting at one end or the other.

yes it will..been on the trail plenty of times...and that sucker will flop around. Besides, if it breaks on the trail while in4wd how are you going to get off the trail. You will have to take a short break to swap em out. Takes about an average hour for both types to swap out while on the trail. Samething for replacing broken birfields on the trail, less then an hours time and you'll be back up and running

So in addition to A-TRAC mythbusting you also teach about 4wd? :p

Usually we swap out the shafts for ahem longer shafts, but still retain the OEM CV joints

The issues with non Toyota re-manufactured CV,s is there is considerably less movement within the actual joints..so for example, if you are on the trail and you are flexing the front suspension out. you are making that CV bind a lot sooner when compared to Toyota CV's. causing it to break.

Well toyota doesn't make CV shafts. Does anyone know who the OEM manufacturer is?

give your local friendly toyota dealer a call and they can help you out. otherwise hit up http://toyotaparts123.donwoodtoyota.com/
