Don't take this the wrong way, but you are probably too young. I know when i was your age the attention that my little lady needs and deserves would have been much too much for me to handle. I have a liver spotted Dalmatian and she is a serious handfull. She is a very smart, well trained (cost me a lot of money) dog but if she does not get ATLEAST 3 hours of good exercise EVERY DAY she turns into a terror. Also, I get up in the morning at 5AM to get to work. Well, dogs dont know the difference of a sunday and a wednesday so I am up bringing her for a run at 5AM monday through sunday. Just some things to keep in mind...

Do an internet search and see if the breed fits your lifestyle. If not, then go with another breed. Are you active or do you spend half the day playing video games and the other half out with your friends? Or school and work? If you determine you still want one, then find a reputable breeder to get your pup.

You said a few weeks ago that you wanted to go to Clemson... what will happen to the pup then? You going to expect your mom/dad to take care of the dog?

Find a good breeder. Dalmations are known for being bred closely which can cause serious issues. Mine was prone to psychotic episodes, where he would attack unprovoked. He got everyone in the family and put me in the emergency room. 21 stitches in my hands later, I had to have him put down.

Great breed, don't let my issue deter you, just do your research and know what you are getting and getting in to.

That sounds like a yellow lab I had when I was a kid - never ended up in the emergency room, but almost lost my thumb to her  and she tore up my dad's arms

dogs are great if you if you can afford the time and patience, dalmations i have to say are so high energy! i agree with what the other person said. i myself have a mini dachshund (my 4th dog) all the others died of old age, the most laid back i've been was with my pekingese, she was so docile and lazy, it was a great 14yrs, i still miss her

I had a Dalmatian for 13 years, one of the best behaved dogs I have EVER seen by far. It was never crazy and hyper as many stereotypes mention. It was purely trained by my father and I, and would do anything you could ask of it. It was also an insanely smart dog. It could be at my grandmothers a little over 2 miles away, and we could call down, get my grandmother to hold to phone up to her ear, tell her to come home.. and off she would go, running back to our house. She was never tied, nor ever needed a leash in public. She would stay right by my side, and follow every command. Such an amazing dog, especially with many of the negative stereotypes. I definitely do understand that not all Dalmatians behave this way though.

The close breeding is an issue as mentioned above. Ours starting having kidney failure around age 10 I believe, and ultimately passing at age 13.

I didn't see anyone mention deafness. Be sure to check your new pup to see if it can hear. Relatively prevalent in Dals.

Sorry to hear that. :( I have also heard similar stories of obedience from the dalmatian alongside the neurotic stories. I guess it'll all come down to how you pick the dog from a reputable breeder and how you bring it up. I will take all of this into consideration when the time finally comes to get my dog.

From what I understand from my researching Dals, ANY animal that is mostly white is more likely to be deaf than any other color. Generally when purchasing a Dal, a good breader will give you a certificate guaranteeing no hearing impairments - its called the baer test.

We had one and she was sweet. But we had to give her up. She ran off every time she got a half a chance and shed like a freakin hair machine. I was finding little white hairs EVERYWHERE for 3 years after she left.

Get a Bichon Frese. They don't shed, their turds are the size of little cocktail weinies and they love your lap. Can be a bit yappy but fabulous dogs and don't require a lot exercise. We miss our little Jake a ton.

but as for the breed. I have had 3 of them in the past. All GREAT dogs and very loyal. They bark when something is not right and will guard you. I loved my dalmations. I am screwed when I move and get my own house because there are so many dogs I love but the dalmation is definitely towards the top of the list.

The last Dalmation I had was 14 when we put him down. One of the best dogs I have had. Apparently he used to drag me around by my diaper when I was a baby and he definitely protected me. the one before him was 12 or so and she was such a sweet dog.
