    Today's ply ratings do not count the actual number of body ply layers used to make up the tire's internal structure, but indicate an equivalent strength compared to early bias ply tires. Most radial passenger tires have one or two body plies, and light truck tires, even those with heavy-duty ratings (10-, 12- or 14-ply rated), actually have only two or three fabric plies, or one steel body ply. The thickness of the tire side wall can very from manufacture, and each tire line, despite the "ply" rating being the same. So.....the only way to tell is to cut it open, and measure the thickness......I belive this would void any warranty the tire has.

    I think you got your American/Canadian conversion messed up there somewhere.... :confused:

    Because I slipped on a rock in August and got a gash in my sidewall and its been bothering me. I took it to the tire shop right after it happened and they said it wasn't anything to worry about but now that I've taken more air out of my tires for winter the sidewalls sag a little more and the split is becoming more noticable. I just don't want to be driving on it if the sidewall is compromised.

    I sort of have a start on the cutting part...thats the problem! :mad:

    Ive done that. I have so many resources on my comp, trying to regurgitate somthing in which to give as an answer to a question in text, can take time. Copy/paste can give the answer without as much time wasted.

    FWIW, most tires I have cut apart, have had a sidwall thickness of about 1/4" or so. They dont get much thicker, until you get into heavy duty tires, or heavy equipment tires. Even Semi's sidewalls are only about 1/3" thick. The "thin-ness" gives a better, more compliant ride. Only Run flat tires have thicker sidewalls.
