Mods & Extended Warranty - do that peacefully exist ???

Many here have given recommendation to one Toyota dealers extended warranty or another - mostly platinum plans. I have made inquiry to several and received pricing for various years/mileage combinations.

Additionally many more have embarked down the ever spinning vortex of modifications, almost all of which include a suspension lift of one sort or another. I too have caught the mod bug as you can see by my signature.

Now to the point - for those of you who do mods, are you buying these warranties or are you finding that once lifts or lockers are installed the warranties void? I'm just trying to see if it's worth investing in one or will I be pissing my hard earned – thinly spread money away. I am considering a locker being offered in the group buy and not sure if installing one will be pressing the boundary, so to speak, on voiding a warranty.

So please if you have any mods like this, (lifts – lockers) please chime in.

lockers would most likely void the warranty on your diffs and the suspension would most likely void the suspension warranty...essentially because you are replacing toyotas part

 

Ya I was kind of figuring that Yoda wouldn't cover aftermarket stuff, but I was wondering if at some point they just throw up their hands and essentially say we are dropping all coverage because your over modded? Do you know if this is the case?

 

^This although it's a fuzzy situation. Legally, they can not deny warranty coverage on a part on the basis that you have aftermarket parts installed unless they can prove the aftermarket part caused the failure. That's all fine and dandy but say your transmission goes, or your transfer case gives out and your locked and lifted. Good luck with that battle... Legally, you may be found in the right, but the money you'd waste fighting it might not be worth the hassle.

 

Just my opinion, the short answer is no, they do not peacefully coexist.

it is easy to scream MAGNUSON MOSS!!! I've had to do it myself, for a legitimate issue with an 07 Jeep we used to have.

Sure, the law is there. Here's the reality - If a (most) dealers see any modifications, they will certainly try and blame the fact that you are in for a warranty claim on your modification.

I had to spend time making repeated visits to the dealers, calling GM's, working with regional service advisers, corporate, and ultimately had to seek legal advise.

That doesn't come cheap. In the end, the cost of the legal process for me, was greater than ditching the vehicle at a loss.

All I had on the vehicle was a remote start installed by a professional shop. The issue we had was present even before this "modification" was performed, but it was all the evidence the company needed to deny warranty work on that particular vehicle.

I may have come out on top if I had pursued, but was not cost effective for me.

 

talk to your dealer! my dealership is awesome, i usually work on my own crap but if its something i dont understand or dont feel like doing i take it to them and theyll actually let me watch and learn.

some of the techs there even have SAS yotas and stuff

 

Thanks for all the input, I suppose it really comes down to the dealership. I can't imagine they would give me crap on an electrical issue or component because my truck is lifted. On the other hand, a trans repair with an aftermarket locker, I can see them trying to point to the locker as the cause to avoid the hit.

 

I believe that Magnuson-Moss only applies to the standard new car/truck warranty. Extended warranties would defer to the contract that you sign agreeing to the terms and conditions. These T&Cs should define the extent of coverage given any mods.

 

Ok - so anyone with a moded truck have one of these extended warranties and have any history behind making a claim?
