eat what you keep!

So this is just a little rant/pet peeve I have.

I have always been taught that "You eat what you kill". It is a basic moral principal that I strongly believe in. I am not against killing animals and keeping fish. I love to do both those things. But damnit you can't just keep it and let it rot.

My friend and I both love to trout fish. Earlier this winter we caught two limits one day and he had to go to class so i offered to clean them and freeze them. I did that. The next day we went fishin again and caught a few more. like 5 between us. I had to hurry to class when we got back so he said he would clean them and throw them in the freezer. I went to his place 4 days later and they were just sitting in his fridge, guts and all. I asked him why he didnt clean them and he said he didnt feel like it.

Fast forward to friday night. We decided to go catfishin. He caught a nice channel cat. 28" and 8.5lbs. well he wanted to keep it so we could have a fish fry. I reminded him about the trout and he said that he would do it this time so i said ok. i then wrote down instructions for him showin him how to skin and fillet the fish. Well I went by there this morning and the fish was still hanging on the tree. not skinned or gutted. It is ruined.

I feel terrible because I knew this was going to happen. I should have just taken it to my place and done it myself. Pretty much I told him I won't go fishing with him anymore if he plans on keeping any fish.

Ok. That is the end of my rant.

 

Yep - I agree. I don't have a buddy that does that all the time or anything, but.... Around here what pisses me off is during the ice fishing season...

Dude's get a real nice crappie or gill, but then don't get any more, and leave them sit on the ice. The shit just totally burns me. When you're ice fishing, the moment you decide to keep that first fish, you better F'ing commit to cleaning it. Even if that's the only fish you get.

I've seen all sorts on nice fish laying on the ice, picked apart by critters or birds...

People are very wasteful. So yeah, I agree with you. If you take the animal, you use it. Period.

 

I feel the same way as you. I enjoy trout fishing but can't stand the taste of trout so I don't go unless I have someone who will take them to eat.

 

I do agree with you, if your going to keep it, you better eat it or give it to somebody that will, if not just release it.

Rather than wait as your friend intends to do, maybe offer to show him in person before he decides to get hit by the "busy bug"? Either way, I'm in the same boat as you. Shoot a deer/ skin it, dress it, and freeze the meat until you're ready to cook and eat it... Same way with fish or any other type of game. I hate to waste it... You should only hunt/kill it if you have a reason (To mount, consume, or sell it... [obviously, my opinion]). I hope that your friend at least understands where you're coming from when it comes to your main point, as I certainly do. Hell, I wish I had some area to go fishing/hunting off base here in Korea. Too bad I've got another 7 months here.

 

Whats Base in Korea?? Im at Kunsan right now and there is some fishing places.

 

I wouldn't fish with the peckerhead anymore...if any of my fishing buddies pulled that, I would certainly not take them out on my boat anymore or offer to go fish anywhere with them.

its not the busy bug. its the lazy bug. what are you doing in Korea? dad was stationed there for a year in Osan with the U-2 squadron a few years back.

Yea a few miles off base before A-Town there is a large basin you can fish there, nothing great but still nice to get out. How long you got left here?

 

I'm an F-16 Avionics Systems Specialist... Flashy name, but I troubleshoot anything and everything the pilot interacts with in the cockpit, to the computers that put bombs/missiles/20 mil rounds on target, or control the aircraft. As of now however... I'm on crutches sadly... stuck debriefing pilots and not working the line. Small World.

 

Wow that sounds sweet....I check pilots IDs lol, aww we do sweet stuff sometimes but mainly just during training....... So nice taco lol, i found the one i wanted a month ago and had my family back home pick it up for me, so i cant wait to be outa here and go have some fun with it. Got a few things i want to do to it but that may have to wait till after a deployment.

 

Well, honestly, It's a small world and I've done my fair share of trips to A-town... I'm not sure I've paid any attention to the basin before hand. If it resembles anything close to a concrete waterway I've ignored it, assuming it was only a aqueduct to water the crops around that area. Perhaps my perception of "Fishing Area" consists of a cove, rocky bank, or is completely overlooked due to my biased view on where I believe could catch any kind of fish because it doesn't resemble anything I'd think I'd be able to catch something from back in the states. (Holy ramble!) In any case, It's good to know I've got a fellow enthusiast out here I could chat with about the area, and about our Tacoma's!

Very true, its not like fishing in the states, im from eastern Ohio so there is good fishing there, but i guess just getting out here is nice, and o yea atown can be something else lol "buy Juice" sorry had the say that yea, its crazy how you can find people like this, i joined here a few weeks ago when i got my tacoma to learn about it and see the options of things to do to it, im thinking, +2.5 lift, bumper, wheels,.. i guess it never ends

 

Well i agree with eating what you kill but i have to be honest i dont eat groundhog or coyote when i get them on the farm.

 

I agree with you man! i Hunt more than fish. but dad thought me to get every bit of meat you can. and also if you can’t take a clear clean kill shot don’t take it. than agin dad works for TWRA=tennessee wildlife resources agency for like 30+ years and has to retire next september when he turns 62. but it makes me mad when people go out and fish or hunt and don’t get the meat! we hunt (and fish some) and we do it for the meat not to say we do those things and to show off what he got.

 

groundhog aint bad. it tastes like beef. just grind it and dont tell people its a field rat
