Dunlop Tires on the Double Cab TRD Opinion

I would like to hear any comments on these tires. I have had Dunlops in the past (Honda Civic) and they were bad... worst tire I have ever had... loud, driving though water was like driving on ice etc.... didn't take long to replace them for the safty of family.

So since then I have always had a Michelin product on my vehicles (Michelin, BF Goodrich, and Uniroyal).

Should I keep the Dunlop’s until they are burnt off then put on a Michelin product or see if I can get a few bucks for a trade in? I figure most of you will have an opinion since so may people on this forum appear to be running BF's

I was planning on living out the Dunflops on my truck...

28,000 miles and tons of slipping and sliding later, I gave up. I replaced them with the Firestone Destination A/Ts. My truck acts like a totally new truck. The Dunlops would break traction in the best of conditions. Michelin, BFG, UniRoyal, Bridgestone, Firestone, and Yokohama all have crappy tires in their range, but every Dunlop I have driven has had very poor traction. It all depends on what you are using them for, but the Dunlop Grandtrek AT20s are by far the worst tire I have ever driven on.

I am much happier after I did the swap. The only downside was a slight drop in fuel economy (1 MPG).

I have the crappy factory BFG rugged trial's on my truck and was planning on waiting till they wore out to upgrade, but i think i'm gonna go ahead and get some BFG AT's after Christmas. saving a few bucks is not worth riding on crappy/dangerous tires. The ones i have now hydroplane like nobody's business in heavy rain (of course we haven't had any heavy rain down here for a while...)

My opinion is go ahead and upgrade, its more important to have a sturdy tire than save some money

 

Yeah, the general consensus I've noticed is that the tires on the TRD off-road package (BFG Rugged Trail) aren't great, but better than the ones on the TRD sport.

Edit: ND, I didn't see your post before I posted. You're really having hydroplaning problems? I haven't had any hydroplaning problems.

 

My week old truck came with Dunlap's my local tire dealer said he would
allow me $50 each on them.... POOF they are gone

 

Dunlop AT20 Grandtrek 265/65-17 tires

I am waiting to take delivery of my new tacoma. I just want to make sure these are the default tires for the TRD.

I am going to call a few places and see what they will give me for them.

 

I hate my dunlops. any small amount of gravel or dirt and im sliding all over the place. Not to mention the heavy rain, im scared im going to hydroplane into a ditch. I live in wine country, so dirt roads are daily. At first it was fun but now its just annoying. Maybe im just used to my big 'ol wide brutes i had on my chevy, but i think these tires just suck. Im looking to get a set of A/T's or M/T's very soon.

 

Oh yeah! big time! I almost got into a head on collision on the way back from rock hill shortly after i got my truck. I never once hydroplaned in the Beamer, so i figured a heavier truck would be even less likely to float on water. It was pooring rain and i hit a big puddle in a turn and next thing i know i'm in the other lane staring at headlights. Not to mention these tires are useless in the mud. They gotta go!

The default tires for the off-road are the rugged trial's, i dont know whats on the sport though. Are you getting a Sport edition?

 

My Taco came with Bridgestone Dueler H/T 684 II. I have a 2008 DC TRD Sport.

 

I have ordered an 08 DC TRD Sport so maybe it will come with these tires. How are they?

 

I had the Dunlop 245/75r16 and took them off asap, discount tire gave me $45 each for them and I uprgraded to a bridgestone dueler A/T revo and a bigger size (265/70R16) Absolutely love them, higher truck and looks and reacts way better. tirerack.com has some good info. If they were the same dunlops that came on my 08 Tacoma they were ranked 59 out of 60 tires in their class, that sure ain't good!

 

you have no problems with the larger size? I would like to go bigger but I don't want to lift.

I haven't seen a thread for the max tire size with out a lift and rubbing yet.

 

No issues at all with the bigger tire size, the guys at discount tire in washington were able to tell me the biggest size to go to without any rubbing.

 

Yeah the Dunlop AT 20 are junk ! As a matter of fact Dunlop stopped making them , but because I am a cheap ass, I got 29,000 miles out of them, then I went to the BFG rugged trail, yuk! They look good, but don't handle the elements or the "rugged trails" very well. If you can swing big get the BFG's AT KO or the Michelins LTX M&S, if your budget doesn't allow that, Cooper ATR'S are nice.

 

Hydroplaned by BMW into a concrete wall on Dunlaps. After the 8 grand in repairs I put Michelins on there and that car was magic after that. The Bridgestones on the Tacoma sport seem good so far but I haven't gotten them out in any real rain. As soon as the rubber wears though its Michelins for me.

 

Revo's are a nice tire. Aggresive tread and long lasting tread. But unless the tires are dangerous.... I would wait till they need to be replaced

 

Do you have the Dunlops or the Bridgestones on the 08 TRD DC?

 

I have the Bridgestones.. they are working out for me. going with a more aggresive tread when they wear out. really only because I like the look
