Its been a great forum to listen to, learn, gained knowledge over electrical issues...thanks to mavericks write up on Towing bible..that helped me to do a 7 way wiring...it was a sucess. But i was thinkng of U/G to 2010 Tacs until i drove a 2010 Tundra TRD O/R 4.6L v8, it has the power that i want for my RV and dont have to compromise on mileage too much i guess. Any inputs on this 4.6L Tundra appreciated.:)

If you haven't bought the tundra...i'd go for the 5.7L V8

I've read there isn't much of a difference in mileage between the two, and down the line if you ever want to sell it, the 5.7L V8 may be a better thing to sell over the 4.6L

    Plus, isn't it like 390HP?! what a monster :D

    SPECS
    TACOMA 4.0L - 16(City)/20(Hwy)
    TUNDRA 4.6L - 14/19
    TUNDRA 5.7L - 13/17
My guts tells me to go with close mileage of Tacoma. And 4.6L has 310HP
(74 higher than TAC) & 327 ftlb torque with max towing 8300lbs.

My dad is getting 18.7L/100KM for his 5.7L. Its a power house. 4.6L does not get that much better mileage. Family member who has 4.6L has only 17L/100KM.

Also the Tundra has 381 Horses

I owned a 2009 Tacoma Dbl Cab 4.0 and traded up to a 2011 Tundra 4.6. The ride is much smoother and quieter, that was obvious from the start. I initally decided on the 5.7 4x4 and drove it for a couple of days before signing the paperwork, but ended up opting for the 4.6 4x2. I know some on here will think that was a ludicrious decision, but let me explain. The 5.7 has 381hp with 401ft-lbs torque - the 4.6 by comparison has 310hp and 325ft-lbs torque. The mileage is advertised as a 2mpg spread on the 4x2 models. In conservative driving (normal to slow acceleration and upper speed of 65mph) I can get 21-22mpg in the 4.6. During the 2 days I drove the 5.7 4wd the best I got was 17mpg with the same driving style. If I drive the 4.6 2wd like most normal people (harder accelerations and upper speeds of 70-75ish) I get 19-19.5; again, using that style of driving I was getting 14.5-15 in the 5.7 4wd. In a truck with a 26 gallon tank the increased mpg is quite significant. The Tacoma was rated at 6500lbs towing capacity, and the truck simply didn't have the weight necessary to tow safely in that range. The Tundra Dbl Cab is rated for ~8400lbs and 10,500lbs. The truck is heavy enough to be stable when towing at it's upper tow capacity. It seems that the brake system and suspension are identical regardless of the engine you opt for, the only difference related to tow capacity is the gain in hp and torque realized by going with the larger V8. The obvious downside to moving from the Tacoma to the Tundra is the overall size of the vehicle. While the size of the Turdra is a PITA in parking situations, the reality is that when being driven the truck just doesn't seem that huge. I made the trade because I needed to be able to move a multi horse (3+) trailer and the Tacoma wouldn't do the job. I was a little reluctant to trade since I was so pleased with the Tacoma...however, after 14,500 miles driven I have NO REGRETS at all about the Tundra!!! It is smooth and powerful, and oddly enough drives more like my 2008 Acura TL than a road monster.

If you have any specific questions PM me and I'd be happy to answer them for you. Good luck :)

Buddy of mine had both. Hour drive to work(South Texas.. FLAT land), he got better mileage in the 5.7L due to the fact that the very few hills/overpasses he had to go over. He told me that the 4.6 would downshift, the 5.7 wouldn't. When I was thinking of getting a Tundra, his advice was the 5.7L based on that experience. So.. based on that, if you live anywhere with hills - I would recommend the 5.7L.

i went from a 2000 tacoma to a 2007 5.7L tundra just two months ago. love it! needed the extra towing and really wanted something newer than my '00.

i'd personally go with the 5.7L (and i did), but either way, you can't go wrong! enjoy man!

    I just traded an 10 4.6 Tundra DC 4x4 with 4.10 gearing.

I would not reccomend the 4.6 liter in a Tundra. when using the cruise control the 4.6 constantly hunts for the "right" gear at highway speeds (60 to 70 mph) this naturally kills the gas mileage... you wont get over 15 mph highway if you use the CC. I would manually control the gas pedal to maintain 65 to 70 mph to avoid constant downshifting at any slight incline or even headwinds. The 4.6 would be good with a two wheel drive single cab tundra. If you are going to buy a Tundra I would highly reccomend that you purchase the 5.7 liter. For a 2 mpg difference you are going to get a much better performing truck.

i've heard this from a couple different people now about the 4.6 hunting for gears... does seem like this would negate any mpg savings the 4.6 has over the 5.7.

Its true.. the reflash of the shifting patterns from the TSB doesnt alleviate the problem either... the truck in double or crewcab is just too heavy for the high revving 4.6 liter coupled with the 6 speed auto.

It is a sweet running engine though and I would LOVE to see it make its way into the Tacoma.. it would shine like no other power wise and I suspect that in the much lighter Tacoma, it would get as good or better mpg as the 4.0 liter V6 it has now.

Would never trade in my Tacoma for a Tundra...But then again, I've never owned an automatic vehicle...just personal preference I guess..

I had thee 5.7liter and got better Gas mileage than my friend that had the 4.6l. The 5.7 has the newest technology while the 4.6 has been a dog over the past 15 years or so. The power difference was awesome! I could disable the traction control and smoke the hell out of the tires. I only did it once to see what it could do. I would for sure go with the 5.7. Otherwise you will drive up by a tundra 5.7 and know the driver thinks your a Puss!!! lol

Am truly thankful to you folks..for sharing and i see a vivid reason to go for 5.7L, but Nolz has some good stuff too..am gonna wait/hear more then decide. Hoping to keep tacoma i had invested in Bilsteins (not 5100s) AFE CAI pro dry S...will soon let guys know..but probably is worthwhile to sell N of border to avoid shipping. Thanks again.

Nice! Nothing wrong with those big trucks if you need 'em - Me, I prefer the (not so much anymore) 'compact' truck. It's a good mix of car maneuverability and truck utility. Personally I think the Tundra is a bit of a dog but that's pretty much par for the course on the full-sized trucks nowadays, and if I were shopping for one I'd probably go for one of those over the fords or chevys.
