how dirty should a throttle body be?:notsure:

    10" sub, OME881 on Bilstein's, 3" all-pro leaf springs with billies in the back, JBA UCA's, bed cover with custom LED lighting, k&n intake and DT headers, OEM E-locker in the rear. 32" BFG KO2 on steel D window wheels, suicide knob. rebuilt 3RZ w/ stage 1 cam and balance shaft delete . big 3 mod, all new suspension and body mount bushings. cat back magnaflow exhaust.
    so i went to clean my MAF and throttle body and discovered the inside of mine was way diterier than i had expected. it was covered in a soot like paste. just wondering if that was normal or if that could be an indication to a bigger problem.
    i am having power/acceleration and fuel consumption issues. which was my reasoning for cleaning it in the first place.


    this is after i cleaned what i could reach, it took scrubbing with a shop rag to get it clean. the crc intake cleaner couldn't do it by itself. and what you see past the butterfly valve is what i couldn't reach. it came off like a pasty resin.

    Did you take the TB off off the engine to clean both sides?? (4 10mm bolts IIRC).
    And how many miles since it was last cleaned?? At 40k-mine was kinda gunky but not insane. 117k on the wifes looked worse but still cleaned up great with a toothbrush and some cleaner...

    they always get dirty...but depends on how much you use ur truck and where you use it also...plus if you run an oil filter like k&n can lead to more dirt collected in there....i take mine off and clean once a yr on any of my trucks/cars

    oh ok so nothing to be concerned about. and no i didnt remove it. i didnt have time. do people clean nown past the throttle body and into the intake manifold?

    by the way what does IIRC mean? i see that allot and never know what it means

    When I switched from the OEM paper air filter to a CAI, I noticed that my throttle body was a dirtier when I cleaned it at my last oil change which had a OEM paper air filter.

    The high flow after market air filters do let a little more than they should go by for the sake of performance and re-usability, but I wouldn't worry about it.

    but thats like a black burned soot, not just a dirty intake. but if everyone is saying theres is the same i am not worried.

    and still though what does IIRC mean?

    Where would this black burned soot come from? Does a combustion reaction happen inside your intake tube?

    You get that residue in there from the breather on the valve cover on the passenger side I believe. It plugs right into the intake on stock and aftermarket intakes. I panicked when I saw mine all dirty then figured that's where it's coming from.

    ^^^^^^Correct, it's more oil fumes from valve cover than what AIR filters let by. Oil filter has nothing to do with this other than making it darker if you never change your oil.

    Where does the egr tube come from that is fed back into the intake? Yes, it comes from the exhaust manifold where soot lives.
