    The house is on the north pole and all of the walls would face south and the bear is whitish (polar bear). There are no bears at the south pole, only penguins............:D

    Its three.

    If you pull two socks out initially and they mismatch (black and white) you just need to pull a third sock to have a matching pair.
    4 would be excessive, and the chances of you matching a pair on the first two socks is minimal (The first sock would have a 20/40, 50%, chance of being black or white, the second sock would have a 19/40, 47.5%, chance of being a matching pair [My math is wrong, but you get the idea])

    you question was MATCH A PAIR, not MAKE A MATCHING PAIR. a pair is 2 socks therefore you need 4 socks to match a pair. :D
