Concealed Carry on Campus?

So I am disgusted every day I go to school that concealed carry is illegal on campus. I go to Virginia Tech, so I see every reason more to carry. Think If ONE person in norris hall had a concealed weapon the whole 4/16 (which they cancelled classes again this year in remembrance) tragedy could have been cut by a large fraction. I'm so excited to turn 21, not to drink but to get my concealed permit. I carry a knife as a last resort regardless but I know against a firearm I don't stand a chance. I already decided when I started carrying it that I am going to test my chances if ever need be. What are your $.02 on concealed carry on campuses.

Yes. I believe it would be necessary to take extra courses to get special certification to carry on campus, but all they are doing is making it easier for these tragedies to take place. By restricting the student bodies right to bear arms, we are just sitting duck to psychopaths.

 

Don't do it until you have checked out the rules!!! They are illegal on some college campus and ok on some as long as you have a concealed carry permit. They are illegal where I work. You might want to check on the penalty for carrying, before doing so.

I personally think it's bull shit that you can't carry at class. IMO since you pay for college you should be able to do whatever the hell you want there.

 

It's called concealed carry for a reason.

It's illegal on most campus' yeah, but the proper authorities should never know if you're carrying or not unless you personally draw your pistol.

 

They tried to pass a bill in AZ last year to allow concealed carry on school campuses, but it got shot down (no pun intended). If you get your CCW permit follow the law to the letter cuz you will be held to a higher standard of acountability than people who don't have them.

I can't believe that this would even be an issue. If you are of age which imho should be 18 (if you can die for this country you should be able to carry a sidearm) and you go through all the steps and hell even take an extra class if need be, by all means you should be allowed to carry. but just like everything else that is meant to help some asshole would screw it up. that's my .02

A great deal of the discussion about concealed carry on college campus seems to cater to the idea that college students are easily upset, easily aggravated and not always having their emotions under control. This, we are told, will lead to “uncontrolled mayhem on campus”.

However:
The Freshman!
I agree that an 18 year old and most freshmen are that age, is experiencing many new and exciting freedoms and ideas. “Wow! I’m not home anymore! I can do just about anything I want!” I know, there are exceptions to being this age, but not many. Always remember that there are exceptions to just about anything anyone, including me, can put forth. But I digress, so back to the topic.
An 18 year old college freshman with all this supposed emotional instability is
still only 18 years old.
Keep that in mind – “Only 18 Years Old!”

The Sophomore!
The “Wise Fool”! This student is usually in the 19 year old bracket. Still wondering around in awe of the newness of a larger world and his ability to seek new adventures. While occasionally remembering “Oh Yeah, I’m in school. Better hit the books a little harder this year than last year.”
A 19 year old college sophomore with all this continued supposed emotional instability is still only 19 years old.
Keep that in mind – “Only 19 Years Old!”

The Junior!
These students have survived two years of culling. Most juniors are in the 20 year old bracket. By this time there is a growing awareness that doing good in college may help in doing good in the work world.

Finally! The Senior!
Having survived three years of dropped classes, frat parties, fun times and Oh Yes! Classes! Most seniors have finally reached the age of 21! THE LEGAL AGE TO OBTAIN A CONCEALED CARRY LICENSE!
I am not aware of any state allowing licensed concealed carry that allows someone under the age of 21 to be so licensed!

So, what percentage of students on a college campus will be seniors? And/or 21 years old? Probably the smallest demographic number.

To be qualified to obtain a concealed carry license, an applicant at age 21 has to go through the same qualifying process I did at age 64.

These are the basic qualifications to be able to apply for a concealed carry license in the state of Texas.

GC 9411.172. ELIGIBILITY. (a) A person is eligible for a license to
carry a concealed handgun if the person:
(1) is a legal resident of this state for the six-month period
preceding the date of application under this subchapter or is otherwise
eligible for a license under Section 411 .I 73(a);
(2) is at least 21 years of age;
(3) has not been convicted of a felony;
(4) is not charged with the commission of a ,Class A or Class B
misdemeanor or an offense under Section 42.01, Penal Code, or of a
felony under an information or indictment;
(5) is not a fugitive from justice for a felony or a Class A or Class
B misdemeanor;
(6) is not a chemically dependent person;
(7) is not incapable of exercising sound judgment with respect to
the proper use and storage of a handgun;
(8) has not, in the five years preceding the date of application,
been convicted of a Class A or Class B misdemeanor or an offense
under Section 42.01, Penal Code;
(9) is fully qualified under applicable federal and state law to
purchase a handgun;
(10) has not been finally determined to be delinquent in making a
child support payment administered or collected by the attorney
general;
(11) has not been finally determined to be delinquent in the
payment of a tax or other money collected by the comptroller, the tax
collector of a political subdivision of the state, or any agency or subdivision
of the state;
(12) has not been finally determined to be in default on a loan
made under Chapter 57, Education Code;
ability to purchase a handgun or ammunition under federal law.
(13) is not currently restricted under a court protective order or
subject to a restraining order affecting the spousal relationship, other
than a restraining order solely affecting properly interests;
(14) has not, in the 10 years preceding the date of application,
been adjudicated as having engaged in delinquent conduct violating a
penal law of the grade of felony; and
(15) has not made any material misrepresentation, or failed to
disclose any material fact, in an application submitted pursuant to
Section 411 .I74 or in a request for application submitted pursuant to
Section 411.175.

After the license application is granted, there are still other laws dealing specifically with concealed carry that must be adhered to before actually obtaining the license.

An individual - as stated:
Still has to be 21 to obtain a concealed carry license.
Still has to have the background check.
Still has to have a clean history.

Then has to pass classroom work concerning laws related to carrying a concealed weapon.
And also has to prove firing proficiency.

Allowing legal concealed carry on a college campus does NOT mean that everyone at the school can carry concealed. The number of students eligible to carry concealed actually is a low percentage of the total student body. And, the students eligible to carry concealed are the ones more mature mentally and by age.

Which is why I'm not doing it. I go to Virginia Tech. My main complaint is after the 4/16 shootings, since we are a PUBLIC university on STATE land, the university could not legally prevent reporters and all from coming onto the campus. Yet the can tell me I can't protect myself?

 

I have a concealed carry and I do carry it often. I didnt have it in college and I was 21 for over a year during college. But looking back I am not sure I would want other people having a pistol in the dorms. I believe that I would have always kept it locked up and safe, But I also remember how a few guys could get in the college setting. To much booze and drugs on a campus setting. I dont believe in any gun control. If it came down to a vote I might leanto a yes to guns on college campus only to prevent an issue like vigina tech. But it still has to make you think. I am afraid that if they let the college kids carry its a matter of time for bad press. It would take one dorm room to be broken in to and have some asshole steal a gun and go on a rampage or even just fire it into mid air. It would hurt every gun owner nation wide. Now if it is a vote for the teachers to carry on campus then it goes with out a question. I think that any teacher that is quailfied to carry concealed should be urged to carry on campus.

 

Let me just say before everyone jumps on me. I am about as pro-gun as they come. And I want to keep it that way. Thats why I say we as gun owners have to pick our battles. And I think anyone can see the potential for a backfire on gun control if we let college kids carry. Its just a thought.

 

excellent points stratton. I am living off campus next year so at least i can keep one to protect myself and my roomates and have a secure way of locking it up. just on campus I feel utterly helpless

I hate being in the middle of all that sheep guarded by sheep and unable to defend myself.
