A/C on with Defrost

Maybe you could have at least read the first page. Then you'd have a clue what the thread is really about.

sure, no prob. The other 10 pages are just debates on the usefulness of the mod anyway. Front page is the key info.

 

Just did the 2009+ version of this mod on page 8, took 15 mins, works perfect!

 

I hooked mine back up.... Its too wet in the PNW to do this mod. I gotta have the air de-humidified before entering the cab. I was driving today and the windshield kept fogging up on me... Had to leave the ac on....

 

But... you can manually engage it with the AC button...?

I know.... But if im ganna be keeping the AC button on all the time in the winter anyways, then theres no need for me to disconect it...
In the summer time I never have it on defrost...

Its just not worth it for me.. and the climate in the PNW..

 

Ah. Yea, I guess I don't get why you did the mod in the first place .

I'm thinking about doing it, just to have the additional control over my truck. I'd rather choose when the AC is on or not, thanks Toyota .

There's also times when I just want heat on the window, not AC. There are other times where I like having the AC blast the window. Thank goodness for enterprising individuals out there who have figured out how to do this!!

 

But you DO have a choice. I live in NY. I need to melt ice off the windshield, and cooling the air with the AC first makes it take longer. I haven't done this mod as I rarely use the last 2 climate control positions. If I flip over to the windshield positions it's to defog the windshield. "Feet only" is sufficient to melt ice and not turn on the AC. No mod needed.

 

"Feet only" doesn't direct air to the windshield tho... I'm confused as to how that will melt ice...? Unless you just mean the ambient air in the truck will melt ice on the windshield...

Also, if you turn the heat up - the AC will not blow cold, lol. It definitely blows hot air.

 

Have you read the manual? It directs air to the outside vents by the doors, front and rear floor vents, and windshield. Try it sometime. I use it to heat the entire truck and clear all the windows without blowing hot air in my face.

 

Well, I didn't expect that. I guess I've never blasted it on 'feet only' mode to notice it also blasts the windshield. Ironically it doesn't say it in the text, but the pic shows it - and I'm sure if I blasted it, I would feel it on the windshield.

Good to know. I think I'd still like to be able to control it... the only mode where I wouldn't be able to is the windshield only mode... Hm. Still considering it . Thanks for the info tho!

 

Yeah. I know. I don't know why a "feet only" pic means "everything but your face"..... But it was the same way with my Corolla. And it did AC on with full windshield so I'm used to using "feet only" 95% of the time.

 

A/C actually is heating outside air if it is colder than the evaporator temp which can be 30-40F. If it's already -5F your A/C IS a heater, preheating before the heater coil.

 

Maybe so, but it always seems to take longer to heat the air with it on than without it. And with winter gas do we really need to burn more fuel running the AC? Also, are you sure the AC is before the heater core? If it's the other way around it's cooling air after the heater core warms it up defeating the purpose of running the heater.

If I run the defrost cycle I have have to turn the heat up unless it's really cold out, then turn the heat back down when I turn defrost off (back to feet only, etc). That leads me to believe the AC is after the heater.

 

I was about to add, that I don't want to run my A/C either, just like you, but it is true below around 35F the A/C isn't chilling the air anymore, and it certainly isn't dehumidifying or drying the air as is so frequently stated.

Evaporators are before the heater core.

If it's above 35F out you would be cooling first.

So, for a 2009+, I'm going to use a neat little quick splice connector to tie the green to the pink. Off the top of anyone's head, will it be a 14-16 gauge connector, or a 18-22 gauge? I haven't torn it open yet, but it's cold outside, and I wanted to minimize my time outside by having everything ready to go, so if anyone already knew....

 

So, did the 2009+ mod. AC is definitely off, but did anyone else notice how everything functioned the exact same (full control over AC, heat, recirc.) when the solid green was spliced to the pink....or the plug was unplugged all together? I noticed this when I tested everything before I realized I forgot to plug the plug back in....can anyone verify?
