locked up front end ?

I have a 2006 4x4 tacoma , 4.88 gears and arb lockers . My wife was driving it in 4x4 the other day on a snowy road and the front end locked up , she got it restarted and out of 4x4 and limped it home . I had a chance today to mess with it and go back into 4x4 ,I could back it up and sometimes move forward but it will also lock up . Any starting ideas ?Thanks alot.

Does it pop and kinda lurch when you move with it in 4x4? If so i would be willing to bet that your transfer case is toast.....been there and done that in a GMC Sierra.

On a side note: the some of the chevy/gmc trucks have a defect in the transfer case that causes them to develop a small hole in the case which leaks out your fluid...then its just a matter of time. This was the case with the one I was driving.

 

So she locked the front end while moving?! Or it activated on its own?

 

I bet you have a destroyed transfer case. Maybe ring and pinion. Most likely caused by turning in 4wd on pavement.

 

She was driving on a snowy dirt road when it locked up, and I have not driven it enough to tell if it is lurching or popping in 4x4. didnt want to do any more damage.

 

i would say transfer case went boom or a cv problem

 

if it was me . i would take the front driveline off and see what it does . then you can narrow down were the problem is .

 

I should have thought of the driveline first before anything , thanks for the tip.
