rear mounted winch?

anyone out there running a rear mounted winch? i have a front one 12k but yestarday i got a killer deal on a 6k atv winch and plan on mounting it in the rear. just curious if any of you guys out there have done it. Cant pass up 30 bucks for a 200 dollar winch with the best warranty ever!

 

i would not. i think 6k is a little to small! most the time i think you want 3x what the thing you are mounting it on weighs.


edit: we have a 3k warn on are rhino that weighs 1200. and they say do not go any smaller for the rhino.

 

Seen lots of rear mounted ones, but i would go bigger.

Although, I would buy that winch anyway... just cause of the deal. Haha

 

I have a 3k winch mounted to a removable reciver hitch although i just use it to pull the hides off of deer. I picked the insert from harbour freight it fits a 2in. style reciver

 

A buddy of mine like to wheel. He has a removable winch with front and back receivers and complete wiring. Plug and play. Has a custom floor mount to secure it while in motion. Definitely is the way to go if you can do it. Saves a lot of headaches trying to turn around and reposition to help or to get out of places.

im pretty sure that the 3k part is wrong.lol because if that was the case then we would need a 15k winch for out tiny little 5k trucks.lol.
i think i once heard the rule was 1.5x your gross weight of the vehicle.
i 6k should be fine, i always used a 4k comeolong for my truck till i got my winch, and it worked great. also i could always use a snatch block..

1st- it is 1.5x, not 3. And as you said, you can use a snatch block.

2nd- even though it is on the small side, if you're so badly stuck that you can't winch out from the front, and there's no one behind you to yank you out, you're better off with that winch than no winch at all.

And who cares if you burn up a $30 dollar winch anyways?

Get a cradle from harbor freight, they're cheap.

 

You could probably use a 6k winch without any problems as long as you use a snatch block and dont use it in really heavy mud and other recovery positions. Although technically w/ a snatch block you double your pulling power, so you should be fine.

You also said you already have a 12k front mounted winch, so that will take care of any hardcore recovery you need to take care of.

 

i think im just gonna permanently mount it underneath because i really dont want to deal with the cradle and such, and since i have a wireless remote for the front, ill just switch it out for the rear one.

yea 30 bucks is no big deal. its one of the badlands winches from harbor freight. I went in yesterday and talked to the lady about the warranty on it and see told me i could blow it up with dynamite and still bring it back and get a new one and then it would renew my warranty. So pretty much its the best warranty around for a winch. always get a new winch no matter what!
