Aloha, I've been searching and reading different brake threads, but I'm still not quite sure what's going on with my brakes...was hoping you could share some wisdom with me...(put your reading glasses on...)

Yesterday, I was off-roading in the back of a Valley visiting friends. I had to cross 7 rivers to get to their house, not deeper than a couple of feet, some as wide as about 40 ft across, most about 20ft. So, lots of water, but not too deep or anything. The road is dirt/pot holes/patches of pavement. On my way back from their house, at the last river to cross, there is a large paved hump then a steep incline to the drop off into the river. I stopped at the top of the hump to check out my approach, and then let off the brakes a little to roll down into the river. I was braking going down the hump, verrry slow I will add, and my brake pedal sunk and my brakes just stopped working and a loud weird kinda shuddering noise happened, and since I had no brakes, I slid into the river. Splash. Then I crossed the river and drove on muddy road for a few minutes, and was on a slight hill when I heard a car coming around the corner, so I braked to pull over to let them by, and my brakes did the crazy noise again and no more brakes, then I slid a little and then they worked again so I could stop. What the hell?!? What's going on with my brakes?
After that, I parked at the beach for a little while to let them dry out before heading back up the hill. The road in and out of the valley is a super steep 25 percent grade narrow paved crappy road, and I was so freaked out that my brakes were going to freeze on me if I needed to stop at all on the hill, and I would roll off the edge and die. Now I'm freaked out about driving down into the valley again for fear that my brakes will do this again and I will slide off the edge of the valley:eek:

So, what happened to my brakes? Wet? or a problem??

Thanks for reading my long story. Here's some pics of that day:)

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking ABS and slick brakes. Still doesn't make me feel any better about going down into the valley though...

Anything I can do different/avoid/make it better for future?

you should be able to disable your ABS on any tacoma.

It's a button to the left of the steering wheel, you should be able to tell which one it is. You have a sport, so I believe that if you hit the button once quickly, it turns on your LSD and turns your traction off. If you stop you vehicle, put it in park, and hold the button down for a few seconds (till you only see yellow light on dash, no red LSD light) then you should have your traction control completely turned off.

You should be fine by just hitting the button once. That will allow your LSD to also kick in while you are accelerating which may be helpful on those kinda roads.

Sounds like your friend has a cool house if theres 10 river crossings to get to it....

Looks like it sucks to live there! Don't use your brakes so much, let your engine maintain your speed by using a lower gear. It sounds like its probably pretty steep so if it's still to fast use 4low and first gear. And I'm pretty sure ABS is disengaged in 4low too. Also ride your brakes a bit after water crossings too, that will dry them up and make them usable/safer.

    ABS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!
    Almost killed me too :(
If you don`t have an ABS disable switch just add one, don`t pull the fuse!
Pulling the main ABS fuse could result in total loss of brakes.

blue wire with the white stripe on connector F-12 pin #20 on the 4WD ECU on a 2005 ran thru a switch to ground.........problem solved

When I offroad, I just open my fuse box and take out the abs relay. It works so much better and it actually brakes!

Thanks for the responses guys! :)

Can anyone else confirm that ABS is disengaged in 4low?? That would make me feel more confident driving down in next time when it's wet. I try not to use my brakes unless I need to...I use 4 low in 1st gear most the way going down into the valley.

how so???? you still have brakes when your trucks off... just no power braking, and how would no abs fuse turn the pump off to power braking?

Just checked to see if my ABS light comes on in 4low...and no! It doesn't...I guess sports don't. Lame. Someday, I'll have to do the switch mod.
